The Hidalgo County Extension Council elected officer for the fall meeting on October 20 in Lordsburg. McCants was named Animal Chairman, Ernest Lordsburg Vice Chairman, Garlyn Hoge Rodeo Treasurer. Many members attended including Mrs. Sam John and Miss Iva Swafford Virden.
Hidalgo County chapter leader Harber J. Heather announced that local March of Dimes funds are exhausted and the National Foundation in New York will provide $400 to aid polio patients in Hidalgo County. The group expands to include arthritis birth defects and nervous system disorders while continuing polio support and a vaccination push.
Lordsburg sets October 27 to November 6 as a city wide clean up period within the limits. Property owners must clear grounds and piles of debris and weeds in accessible spots for city trucks. Vacant lots require cleaning and owners may be charged for the work under Ordinance No. 11.
The Hidalgo County Extension Clubs met at the courthouse to draft a tentative 1959 work program. Club chairmen presented member topics, with Mrs. Evan Thomas of the New Mexico A&M department offering suggested topics. Attendees included Mrs. Sam John, Mrs. Jay Pierce of Virden, Mrs. Loyd Reed, Mrs. Ernest Woody of Lordsburg, Mrs. T. H. McCants, Mrs. Fred Kerr Jr. of Cotton City, and Mrs. Dewey Brice, Mrs. Nancy Williams, Mrs. Garlyn Hoge, Mrs. Victor Somoza, and Miss Alice Somoza of Rio Reo.
Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Johnson have returned from a California trip visiting his daughter and family in Anaheim and tourist spots including Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland. En route they spent time with Mrs. Johnson's mother in Albuquerque and Santa Rosa and stayed several days in El Paso before returning home.
Primary ballots for the Chamber of Commerce election were mailed to members last week. Voting deadline extended from October 21 to October 27. members are urged to vote and return ballots to the CofC office by the new date.
Mrs Art Blanseet wins 14 ribbons at the Deming Tri State Fair. First place for canned beets and shelled black eyed peas, third for snapped black eyed peas, plus multiple high placements in green chili summer squash soup mix preserves and pickles.
The American Legion Auxiliary seeks unwrapped gifts under 1.00 for men women and children ages. Items delivered to Up-To-Date Dry Goods with Mrs Fierro or call Mrs Jeanes at 35 or 569 W for pickup and mailing after patient selection.
Dove hunters are reminded that the dove hunting season closed on October 20. An earlier notice incorrectly stated an extension to December 20. the error has been corrected and the season ends on the 20th.
Sheriff Ed Jackson reports two break ins in Lordsburg on a Saturday night. Blue Moon storage room loot eight cases of beer. seven suspects arrested including Estrada Aguillar. Billy and Henry Flores plead guilty to break in and entering. High school entered Tuesday night with fire extinguishers sprayed, minor damage. no vandalism losses.
Valley View Presbyterian Church invites members and friends to a noon Sunday dinner on Oct 26. The church participates in the United Clothing Appeal with the Women's Association overseeing collection and shipping of used clothing for regions facing cold winters.
Margaret Locklar of Silver City received the 7th District American Legion endorsement at the district fall convention held in Silver City. The district, with two-day sessions and its auxiliary from Truth or Consequences, named Locklar potential nominee for New Mexico’s top Legion post.
The 4-County Council met in Lordsburg for its regular fall session to conduct routine business. An award night is tentatively scheduled for late November or early December with Virden handling entertainment and Cotton City organizing refreshments. E. L. Payne served as secretary in Mrs. J. F. Houser’s absence. Present were Mrs. Ernest Browning, president, Mrs. L. M. Hatch, Mrs. James Morris, Chester Jones, county agents Mrs. Eva M. Thomas and Ed Hitson.
Mr and Mrs Earle Kerrs returned Monday from a week of fishing near Durango Colorado at the summer lodge of Mr and Mrs R B Waggoman of Albuquerque. En route home they visited Capt and Mrs John Bradford in Albuquerque and attended to business.
