Nominating ballots for three new directors were counted at the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce meeting. Nominees include Harold Bishop J A Foster George P Jeffus Claude Speer George Haltom Dr J H Baxter and Carl Lehman. Ballots must be returned by November 12. Perkins of Wickenburg spoke on Highway 70 Association at the meeting.
Hurley junior high hosted the Lordsburg Mavericks and sprinted to a 45 to 20 victory. Tack Byrd sparked the Hurley offense with steady carries as the Indians piled up 281 rushing yards and controlled the game from the opening kickoff.
Four persons were hospitalized after a 2 45 p m Sunday crash on U S highway 80 near the underpass. Lester Boyd of Los Angeles California drove a 1947 Fraizer sedan in the wreck.
Border Patrol officers in Lordsburg captured two Mexican aliens, escapees from the Tucson federal prison. Both 19 year olds Carmen Reynoso Magdalena and Gerardo Moreno Mara were originally sent to Tucson on immigration sentences.
The Elks Club family picnic on Sunday featured games and races led by Jos Springer of Animas and H C Linquist with Alan Koff giving plane rides for children. Prize winners included Connie Young and Mary Ann Linquist in the under 10 and under 12 events, plus Nancy Bowers and Mrs Andrew Fallat in various contests.
A Department dispatch states the body of Private Jesus Rivas and two other New Mexico servicemen killed in Korea is being returned on the Malden Victory. Rivas enlisted spring 1950, left for Japan and Korea August 24 1950, and was killed September 22 1950. He is survived by his father Jesus Rivas Sr and three sisters Alicia Sanchez Vera Molina and Angelina Smalling.
Lordsburg Rifle club moves to organize a junior unit. Officers and members met at Rich's Motor Co. to plan a group of ten to twelve boys aged 14 to 18. The aim is to teach rifle handling and responsible firearm care and respect.
Homecoming activities begin at 3 p m with a full schedule for Lordsburg high school on Friday October 19 A 4 00 assembly in the high school features Tommy Growing Pains by the Dramatic club pep activities and alumni talk A bonfire at 6 30 p m parade to follow the Deming game kicks off at 8 00 p m and queen ceremonies occur between halves The Homecoming dance runs at the high school until midnight
The Phelps-Dodge Corporation presents an Italian pink marble drinking fountain for the new Lordsburg High School lobby. The fixture, set in hand baked Italian tile, is described as unusual and expensive and signals progress as walls rise.
The State Bureau of Revenue says 1952 automobile plates will be red on white and track plates white on red, produced at the state prison plant and expected for sale by December 15.
