Hidalgo Co Man Praised by Court

At the close of the grand jury session in Santa Fe U S district judge A Phillips thanked the federal grand jury for its able and expeditious handling. Foreman W Hopkins of Rodeo was praised for driving the jurors from eight in the morning to six at night, a record effort by bailiffs noted.

Round House Workmen Honor Former Chief Owens

Round House men welcomed their former chief Mr. Owens with a serenade by the show band last Tuesday noon. Owens, visibly moved, pledged to merit continued esteem as he and Mrs. Owens occupy their former Railroad Row home where friends greet them.

Modern Cafe to Open Soon by Dunagan Brothers

Dunagan Brothers Benj. 8. and Walter E. plan to open the Modern Cafe in the former Railroad Club room in the near future. It will be an all American institution with first class chefs and waitresses and a lunch counter that will please everybody. The opening date will probably be announced next week.

State Supreme Court Upholds Soldier Tax Exemption Law

The New Mexico Supreme Court rules the 1924 soldier tax exemption law constitutional with one exception in a challenge by KR F Asplund. Ex servicemen paid 1922 property taxes may seek refunds via County Treasurer or District Court, while the 1922 road tax and poll tax remain non exempt. Exemption covers annual road tax and road work, but not the per capita road tax.

Death of John Gaston Jernigan Known Local Resident

John Gaston Jernigan known as Jack Jernigan died Sunday afternoon at his niece Mrs B Wagner’s home. Born in Mississippi about 75 years ago he moved to Lordsburg 24 years ago and worked as bookkeeper for Eagle Drug Merc Co. An invalid for years he lived with his niece for the last two. Funeral Monday October 15 conducted by T A Phillips of the Christian church with Jack Heather in charge. He leaves sister Mrs G H Richardson of Claude Texas and brother J J Jernigan of El Paso Texas who could not attend.

Fortunes from German Marks Arrive for Editor

When J. B. Foster arrived from Chicago he delivered 100,000 German marks to the editor and soon after Robert FL Fitz sent another 100,000. In prewar terms the sum was about $28,000 in gold, but its value diminished to near nothing by war time, though the sight of the notes made the editor feel briefly rich.

The community mourns Jeane Buchannan Wood known as Grandpa Wood who died at his Lordsburg home on Oct 10 1925. Born March 6 1890 in Carlton Arkansas he married Finnly Simpson on Christmas Eve 1872 in Colorado and they celebrated 50 years of marriage last Christmas. Survived by four children Albert Vex Joe George and Mrs Shelly Wood with one son predeceased. Funeral at Christ Church in Lordsburg conducted by Pastor T A Phillips.
