At the close of the grand jury session in Santa Fe U S district judge A Phillips thanked the federal grand jury for its able and expeditious handling. Foreman W Hopkins of Rodeo was praised for driving the jurors from eight in the morning to six at night, a record effort by bailiffs noted.
Round House men welcomed their former chief Mr. Owens with a serenade by the show band last Tuesday noon. Owens, visibly moved, pledged to merit continued esteem as he and Mrs. Owens occupy their former Railroad Row home where friends greet them.
Dunagan Brothers Benj. 8. and Walter E. plan to open the Modern Cafe in the former Railroad Club room in the near future. It will be an all American institution with first class chefs and waitresses and a lunch counter that will please everybody. The opening date will probably be announced next week.
J. D. Wakefeld general agent of Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. and L. W. Galles special agent are in town this week. Galles a former deputy grand chancellor who helped bring the grand lodge to Lordsburg spoke at K P lodge Tuesday evening delivering an inspiring talk.
Philip Bohn owner of Army Stores with locations in Albuquerque El Paso and Las Vegas opens his fourth shop in Lordsburg in the former bank building at Pyra mid and Railroad. He offers a wide range of Army and Navy goods in new and reclaimed condition.
The Flecta Circlo hosted an enchilada dinner praised for meeting Lordsburg standards. Enchiladas and other dishes drew strong praise with profits reported above 870.
The special master sale of 640 acres belonging to Jake M New estate near Cloverdale was laid off by the Victoria Land and Cattle Co with Supt Walter Birchfield acting for the company under district court authority. Attorneys Vaught and Watson appeared with N A Bolich from Deming.
Ex soldiers entitled to exemption must send their names and full details to the Hidalgo County Assessor J. D. Jordan. The assessor will prepare the required list under the law to grant the exemption.
Wade B. Smith plans to open a new Railroad Club, a project seen as a credit to the entire community and a source of local pride. The effort highlights civic spirit and local entrepreneurship.
W. H. Kinnon MFE of San Francisco, a key figure in Vale don’s rise in mining, shakes hands with Ludiburg friends on Tuesday. His daughter Louise is a popular member of our school faculty.

The New Mexico Supreme Court rules the 1924 soldier tax exemption law constitutional with one exception in a challenge by KR F Asplund. Ex servicemen paid 1922 property taxes may seek refunds via County Treasurer or District Court, while the 1922 road tax and poll tax remain non exempt. Exemption covers annual road tax and road work, but not the per capita road tax.
A church or league event invites readers to attend at 6 30 Sunday evening to hear a discourse on The Christian State and Its Citizens and consider remedies for troubles. The notice promotes community discussion and participation.

John Gaston Jernigan known as Jack Jernigan died Sunday afternoon at his niece Mrs B Wagner’s home. Born in Mississippi about 75 years ago he moved to Lordsburg 24 years ago and worked as bookkeeper for Eagle Drug Merc Co. An invalid for years he lived with his niece for the last two. Funeral Monday October 15 conducted by T A Phillips of the Christian church with Jack Heather in charge. He leaves sister Mrs G H Richardson of Claude Texas and brother J J Jernigan of El Paso Texas who could not attend.
The Wood family thanks friends and neighbors for aid and sympathy and for the flowers they received during their time of loss.
The Valedon Schools host a benefit dance at the new Railroad Club on Friday evening October 19. The Bone Ton Orchestra under Wm Donahue provides music. Tickets cost 1.50 dollars with spectators charged 25 cents. Public invitation extended.
When J. B. Foster arrived from Chicago he delivered 100,000 German marks to the editor and soon after Robert FL Fitz sent another 100,000. In prewar terms the sum was about $28,000 in gold, but its value diminished to near nothing by war time, though the sight of the notes made the editor feel briefly rich.

The Greenlee county fair schedules two major horse events. On Friday November 2 the 306 yard cow pony race occurs, and the following day the mile free-for-all race. Viola Themas and Jewell Ownbry wear dresses made from curtain cretonne with an appealing pattern. The fabrics cost one dollar and the girls completed the outfits in a few hours, showcasing applied domestic science.

Lordaburg booster A Olsen a round house foreman and his wife and son depart Lordsburg for Tucson after transferring to the Southern Pacific. He praises the town calling it finest he has seen and notes his efforts to beautify the shops area. A farewell band played at the station.

The community mourns Jeane Buchannan Wood known as Grandpa Wood who died at his Lordsburg home on Oct 10 1925. Born March 6 1890 in Carlton Arkansas he married Finnly Simpson on Christmas Eve 1872 in Colorado and they celebrated 50 years of marriage last Christmas. Survived by four children Albert Vex Joe George and Mrs Shelly Wood with one son predeceased. Funeral at Christ Church in Lordsburg conducted by Pastor T A Phillips.
Friends of Dr. and Mrs. Buvens share joy as Hazel Morningstar and Dr. Robert KF Buvens welcome a son named Gilbert Allan Bavens born October 13 1923 at Lordsburg Hospital. The grandfather is thrilled by the family milestone and links the name to his grandson.
Dr. B. E. French of Los Angeles W Arland of Pomona and A D Devonshire of Pasadena are spending a few days in Lordsburg. They all think this a wonderful region.
