Tombstone Helldorado celebration returns with old and new attractions

Visitors to Tombstone’s annual Helldorado festival on October 16-15 will see re-created town history and new restoration work completed over the past year. The event features the Tombstone Historama narrated by Vincent Price, color historical films, life-sized gunfight figures at the OK Corral, and displays in Crystal Palace Saloon, Jin Hall, and Schieffelin Hall.

Willow Creek Aspencade To Meet At Glenwood

The Willow Creek Aspencade plans a Sunday motorcade from Glenwood to Mogollon on a newly paved Gila National Forest outer loop road. Visitors travel through Silver Creek Canyon to Silver Creek Divide and Willow Mountain, viewing high country timber and ponderosa pine forests, with a noon barbecue at Willow Creek Ranch. Reserve trips via Silver City Chamber of Commerce.

Hidalgo County Home Agent To Receive National Award

Mrs Eva M Thomas Hidalgo County home agent with New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service will receive the Distinguished Service Award of the National Home Demonstration Agents Association November 18 at ceremonies with the national meeting in Washington DC. She is noted for work in clothing selection construction and care and training adult 4 H leaders. She has been a county home agent since 1951 serving in Knox County Nebraska until 1954 and since 1954 in Sierra Luna Otero and Lincoln Counties as home agent at large. She has been home agent in Hidalgo County since 1955 and will be cited for harmonious relationships with coworkers and cooperators in the counties where she has served indicating knowledge of adult and youth psychology and sympathetic understanding of people’s problems. Her attendance at regional Extension summer schools and professional meetings shows intellectual curiosity and desire to continue study.

Drama Club Presents One Act Plays Saturday

LHS Drama Club hosts a Saturday night program at 7 30 in the Cafetorium featuring three one act plays directed by senior students. The lineup includes Story of a Dead Woman The Dear Departed and An Overpraised Season with intermission by Bernard Richardson. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.

Lordsburg Schools Close for Teachers Convention

Lordsburg Municipal Schools will close October 21 22 and 23 for the annual teachers convention in Albuquerque. Superintendent Wesley Freeburg said the district will suspend classes and activities during the three days.

Lordsburg PTA to Host District Eight Conference

Lordsburg unit of the P T A will host the District Eight Conference of the New Mexico Congress of Parents and Teachers on Saturday Oct 17 in the Lordsburg schools cafetorium. The program opens at 9 am with district director David Warren presiding and features talks by Mrs Forrest Sackett and Fred Strait. All District Eight units and state board members will participate. residents concerned with child welfare urged to attend.

Tularosa Downs Mavericks 19-6 in homecoming loss

The Lordsburg Mavericks fell 19-6 to the Tularosa Wildcats in a homecoming game. Tularosa sealed the win with 24 seconds left when Tinker Murray found Tony Alvarez for a 20 yard touchdown as John Payne powered through Lordsburg and helped keep the Wildcats undefeated in the 3-8 conference. Lordsburg travels to Duncan for a nonconference matchup with Duncan Wildcats.

Membership Meeting Wednesday at El Charro Cafe

A Chamber of Commerce membership meeting will be held October 21 at 12 noon in El Charro Cafe, with Olen Monroe presiding. All members and interested persons are invited, and attendees should notify the Chamber office by October 20. The board meets monthly on the third Monday and urges member participation.

Mrs Lytle Elected Band Parents President

The band parents at the high school elected officers for the coming year. Mrs. Bill Lytle was chosen president with Mrs. A D Black as vice president Mrs Raymundo Saucedo as secretary and Mrs Gar land McHalffey as treasurer. A membership drive is planned and the group will meet the fourth Monday of each month.

WNMU Deming Center offers seven courses this fall

Western New Mexico University Resident Center in Deming opens with seven courses taught by local instructors. Classes run 7 to 9 50 p m Monday through Thursday at Deming High School, with one course at graduate level. Five courses carry into spring and more are planned under the university’s statewide service philosophy.

Former Animas teacher dies in Texas

Local Highway Dept. Employee Killed On Job

Pat A. Romero a 29 year old resident of Lordsburg was killed on the U S 70 construction site 18 5 miles west of town while taking samples. He was struck by a sprinkler truck driven by John W. Burch 29 of La Luz New Mexico the truck backed into the center of the roadway hitting Romero who was digging a test hole in the center of the roadway.

Conner and Thygerson Reelected Soil District Supervisors

Conner and Sven Thy person were reelected to three year terms as farm supervisors of the Virden Valley Soil and Water Conservation District at a regular session held in Lordsburg. Special guest Ralph Burton of First National Bank of Lordsburg attended. Other district supervisors include Calvin Martin Robert Martin and L R Jones. A detailed report of district accomplishments was submitted.

Dr Bower To Speak At Woman's Club Meeting

Lordsburg Woman's Club will meet at the club house Monday evening October 19 at 7 30. Mrs Wesley Freeburg and Mrs C L Rogers will report highlights from the Fourth District Convention NMFWC held at Capitan last weekend. At 430 Dr Leon Bower formerly a professor of History and English at N M W U will speak on World Affairs. Public invited.
