The 1984 Soap Box Derby kicks off with final inspections at the Pyramid Park bonfire gathering. The Interior Department will distribute checks on September 28, 1984, with New Mexico as the second highest state recipient at 10.2 million for 22.4 acres of federal lands. The funds may be used for any purpose by the recipients.
Lordsburg Optimist Club dedicates Todd Bensley Rifle Range in Hidalgo County with a ribbon cutting at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday October 6 followed by competitions at 10:30 a.m. Rifle and pistol events span Saturday and Sunday October 7. Big Buck Contest offers $100 prize for top horn score.
