The Tourist Division of the Department of Development releases a new up to date New Mexico Highway Map. It features a color reverse side with 56 points of interest and shows how to reach them from major highways. It lists population and elevation for 68 principal cities and towns.

Who's Who Contest Draws High Payout At Local Shell

Claude Bentley won 82.50 for solving 16 clues in the Who's Who contest. Bill Kimbley selected the prize setup with envelopes showing clues, and Gene’s Shell Service sponsored the box for another draw next week. Bentley can pick up his prize at the Liberal office Friday.

Deming Wildcats topple Mavericks 32 6 in nonleague clash

Deming Wildcats handed the Mavericks their first defeat 32 6 last Friday. Deming opened with a touch down drive then added two more scores in the second quarter. Mavericks answered late with a 3 yard run by Estrada but missed the extra point. Next games include Clifton Arizona away and a conference date at Tularosa on October 9.

Mrs Cox Promoted to Evening Chief Operator

Velma Cox, longtime Mountain States Telephone Co. operator in Lordsburg for eight years, is promoted to evening chief operator. She succeeds Ella Mae Allen who has moved to Colorado.

Bingo Party for Veterans at Ft Bayard

Coronado Unit 29 of the American Legion Auxiliary of Animas sponsored a semi annual bingo event at Ft Bayard on Monday evening. Prizes included cigarettes and canteen books. the top prize was a long distance telephone call to a patient’s home. Refreshments featured homemade cakes and tote books and magazines valued at 25.35 dollars for the library. Helpers included Mrs. R. H. Wam el Sr. and Mrs. Jack Vaughn of Animas and Mrs. Buford Slover Jr and Zelma Tots of Deming, aided by Mrs. Maude Miles of Fort Bayard.

District Masons Attend Silver City Workshop

All Masonic lodges in the 10th district attended the workshop in Silver City last Sunday with several lodges from other districts. Grand Master H Stanley Dennis and Grand Lecturer Ronald Brickman led discussions on several worthwhile topics. Silver City Lodge No 8 catered a concluding dinner.

Five Adults and Students Charged in Narcotics Ring

Five adults and five high school students were involved in a narcotics ring operating for about seven months. Arnaldo Medina and Santos Ornelas, both of Lordsburg, were arraigned and bound over for district court. Other defendants pleaded not guilty or were charged with using marijuana and furnishing it to a minor. Investigators recovered stolen property and solved one burglary and two house-breaking cases.

Public Safety Director Jim Smith announced late Wednesday night that Patrolman Frank Aspilers was promoted to lieutenant in recognition of his work in investigating and breaking a narcotics case.

Local Man Found Dead In Hidalgo County Jail Cell

Joe Sanchez aged about 60 was found hanged in his Hidalgo County jail cell Tuesday morning. He reportedly used a belt to hang from a pipe soon after requesting a pencil from Jailer Hugh Evans. A farewell note offered no reason for the suicide. Time of death was set at about 8 15 am by the corner's jury after a prior arrest over the weekend for drunkenness and a prior attempted wrist-slashing with a tin cup.
