Local high school football clash set for Saturday December 1 at 1 30 PM as Animas hosts Tularosa. Fans expect a hard fought game with playoff implications and regional bragging rights on the line at Animas Stadium.
A bidding call for the 1984 street paving program was issued with bids due December 18 and work targeted to start in January 1985. Mayor Pro-tem Clark Smith announced about 40 delinquent utility accounts will be turned over to courts and collection agencies at the start of December. Continued on Page 2.
The City Corner announces a fast tracked street repair program using hot mix to fix pavement cuts and potholes. City Superintendent Arturo Talavera has listed needed work and asks residents to report missed potholes to City Hall. Bids accepted December 18, 1984. work to begin early 1985. Merchants rush to complete merchandise packaging and store setups with one week to go. Western Bank will extend hours 6 to 10 pm for the event offering all services. Hidalgo County Sheriff Billy Darnell reports Thanksgiving disturbances including an armed robbery Saturday November 24 at the Bar T in Separ. Two suspects in a white 1977 Ford were stopped near Lordsburg after a roadblock. Larry McDonald Riley and Chester Bryan, both 20s and from Immokalee Florida, were booked on Armed Robbery.
A lifelong traveling clown known as Paul Handy travels by a self pushed cart, covering nearly 9,000 miles and raising over 274,000 dollars for March of Dimes. Beginning in January 1982, he aims to return to Phoenix with no set end date, crafts rocking chairs from aluminum cans to fund his trip, and recalls meeting a polio patient who inspired his charitable crusade. The story notes his 25 year clowning career and the Smithsonian retirement of his first cart.
The Lordsburg Optimist Club elected 1984 85 officers with Eddie Lopez as president and David Chavez as secretary. Don Kling and Tom Myers are vice presidents, while the board includes Tommy Chavez Edmundo Sanchez Robert Young Jesus Martinez Paul Bravo and Clark Smith.
Immunization clinics scheduled for December 12 and 26 were cancelled. Only one clinic remains on Tuesday December 11 from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The Lordsburg Municipal Schools board will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday December 4 1984 at 7 00 p m in the board room at 501 West Fourth Street Lordsburg New Mexico 88045.
The Lordsburg Lions met in regu lar session Tuesday noon at the El Charro Restaurant. Attendance was down due to deer hunting season but attending members acted on the deci sion of the annual Christmas Decora tion Contest. Judging will be Monday evening, December 24, and all are encouraged to participate. Phil Pressler, Director of Bands for the Lordsburg School System, contacted Lion President Jesse Liles about the state and international Lions Band.
Governor Toney Anaya says more than $1,000,000 in federal funds and over $318,000 in state funds have been released to develop outdoor recreational facilities. About $108,000 targets Hidalgo Catron Grant and Luna counties with projects including Lordsburg restroom facilities funded by a $10,000 federal and $5,000 state match.
