Local Law Officers Confiscate Marijuana
A joint Border Patrol and Hidalgo County Sheriff operation seized 251 pounds of marijuana. A 1969 Ford pickup was stopped at Highway 80 south of Rodeo at 7:00 AM on Friday November 22, with two American suspects Vidal Melinder and David Friend both 38 from Douglas Arizona. Street value estimated at 200800 dollars. Earlier seizures include 84 pounds on October 22 and 1232 pounds on October 28 hidden in a gas tank and a goose neck trailer.

City Election March 3 Elect Four Councilmen
The regular Municipal Election is set for March 3, 1992 to elect four council members, one from each ward, for four year terms. Current holders are Esperanza McDonald Ward 1 Anthony Mora Ward 3 Arturo Talavera Ward 4 and a vacant Ward 2 seat. Talavera was appointed in 1991 after Chris Musquiz resignation. Another vacancy resulted from Robert Borrego’s resignation with no appointment. Precincts 1 2 and 3 are consolidated. polling at James H Baxter Civic Center, absentee at 206 S Main City Clerk office. Voter registration with Hidalgo County Clerk required by February 4 1992 at 5:00 p.m.

City announces solid waste rules and hours for Lordsburg landfill
The City of Lordsburg will enforce state regulations under the Solid Waste Act starting December 2 1991. Landfill hours are 8 am to 4 pm seven days a week with a monitor on site. Violators who scavenge face fines up to 500 per offense. Demolition debris incurs a 25 fee. After hours trash should be placed in containers outside the fence. The city recently tested public reaction by closing the landfill and notes cooperation with rules is requested. Mayor Salvador M Diaz Jr wishes the community a Happy Thanksgiving.

The New Mexico Human Services Department announces LIHEAP assistance for needy households. Eligible families receive a one time certificate redeemable at utilities. benefits depend on income, household size, heating type, and location. SSI recipients auto qualify. others may apply starting November 13 with deadlines in December. About 63,000 households benefited last year with average payment around 117 dollars.
