Court of Honor in Virden special to the Liberal

A Virden District Court of Honor in the Virden recreation hall on November 20 featured a pay ceremony and Pledge of Allegiance by Troop 24, talks by Bishop Parley P. of Virden, and multiple presentations. Charles Clouse received the Eagle. Jay Lunt and others earned First Class and Merit Badges.

Winners Announced in FFA Speaking Contests at Willcox

Seven FFA chapters competed in public speaking and creed speaking contests in Willcox on November 20. Kerry Donaldson won first in public speaking receiving 15 dollars with Lyle Richter and Joe Glenn taking second and third. Kerry Donaldson advances to the state contest in Phoenix for 400 dollars. Dean Richter and David Jones placed in creed speaking.

Directors Elected by Chamber of Commerce

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce elected Harold Bishop Jack McGhee Richard B Rice and Russell Smith to three year terms. Seventy six ballots were cast with one vote for only three candidates.

Jeffus Named Local Memorial Chairman of Heart Association

Homer Brooks, chairman of the Lordsburg Heart Fund, announced George P. Jeffus as local memorial chairman for the New Mexico Heart Association. Contributions to Jeffus will aid the 1958 Heart Fund, supporting research and heart disease fight efforts in the area.

Christmas Seal Sale Underway in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County opens its Christmas Seal Sale to support the Tuberculosis Association with Mrs. Frank Smith as chairwoman. The drive runs from November 15 through December. Dr. Joseph Gordon of Albuquerque urged continued chest X ray surveys and tuberculin testing, and called for health education, noting funding is needed to sustain TB programs.

First Auction Held By Band Parents in Lordsburg

The Band Parents Club held Lordsburg’s first auction last Saturday in the Central School gym. Senior band concert directed by Roger Brandt drew good attendance before the sale. Licensed auctioneer Jennings Jarvis oversaw sales of many items including showers bicycles lawn mowers and all kinds of electrical appliances. Mrs Ena Mitchell praised his engaging style. The committee plans another sale at a later date.

Dr. Arthur L. Bach announces that 14 seniors at New Mexico Western have been named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Selection cited high scholarship leadership and future promise with a committee choosing based on campus activities and enrollment. Two Highway Accidents Reported This Week

State highway patrolman Joe Rutland reported two accidents on highways 70 to 80. Sunday night 1520 E San Antonio El Paso driver Velasquez rolled after hitting a slick spot 26 miles east of Lordsburg, driver uninjured. Monday night 10 15 Har ry Kirkpatrick San Antonio St El Paso hit a 1950 Chevrolet driven by Charles Williams Pasadena California. passenger Carl Knudson Los Angeles received a small head cut. Both cases investigated by highway patrolmen.

Winners Named in Hidalgo County Meat Poster Contest

Winners were announced for a county meat poster contest in Hidalgo County sponsored by the New Mexico Meat Institute. Forty six posters explored nutritional value history and economic value of meat in New Mexico. first through third place winners from Lordsburg Eddy and Rodeo schools advance to state competition with a top state prize of 400 dollars.
