The Air Force will inactivate the Ground Observer Corps by January 31 1959 as the radar net expands. About 280 900 civilian volunteers staffed 16 000 posts and 50 filter centers nationwide over nine years. Lt Gen J H Atkinson praised volunteers and a January Tucson ceremony will present certificates to all skywatchers.
Lordsburg High School starts 1958-59 basketball next Thursday with the Mavericks hosting Reserve. Reserve brings two tall veterans and the schedule lists games against Hachita Cliff Hatch Animas Deming Cobre Willcox Western Cloudcroft Gadsden and a district and Western tournament later in February.
Jim Reager and family endured a knee deep snowbound ordeal in the Chiricahua range after their car became stuck. Jim hiked eight miles before meeting Dr. W H Thorpe of Cambridge and his wife who gave aid, then rode to Rodeo with Dick Hamilton. A Jeep later enabled a return to bring the car home while the family enjoyed a skiing vacation despite the block.
A civil service examination notification announces vacancies for a career conditional X ray technician at the VA hospital in Ft Bayard New Mexico with a 4040 per year salary. Applications on Form 57 and 5001 ABC must be filed with the executive secretary of the board of U S Civil Service Examiners at the VA hospital Ft Bayard New Mexico.
The Counting Committee of the Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce reported new directors on Monday. The appointees are Frank Harenberg Vic Reay and B M Kimbley joining holdovers Harold Bishop Jack Morgan Russell Smith G P Jeffus Wesley Freeburg Dick Rice Frank Bowman and Jack McGhee.
The Safford branch held its conference on Sunday with Sunday School canceled due to attendance. An annual dinner and bazaar followed on November 21 featuring Tyke Raymond on Thanksgiving history, Russell Richins with a poem, and Primary songs. Mrs. Max DeVilbiss won the door prize and Mrs. Carlene Massey a lamb cake. toys and goods were sold after a ham supper. Attendees came from Rodeo Animas and Cotton City.

The Chamber of Commerce hosted a coffee at Hotel Hidalgo Coffee Shop for Ruidoso delegates en route to the U S 70 Association convention in Safford New Mexico. Guests included Mr and Mrs Fred Richardson Mr and Mrs Carl Le Bord Earl Biar H R Jackson Fred Pitts and others. Lordsburg chamber members greeted the guests.
A mission in English will be preached by the Rev Julian Rousseau OFM from December 7 to 14 at St Josephs Church. Weekday masses at 7 30 a m with Friday 5 p m session. Main service 7 30 p m for adults, children 7 14 at 4 30 p m. Special information classes offered for non Catholics.
Las Cruces investigators found a 1955 Chevrolet sedan abandoned after it was stolen from Lordsburg last Friday. Lordsburg police chief Lalo Sanchez links the case to a suspect in custody in Roswell who allegedly stole a Phoenix car and abandoned it in Thatcher. A 1953 Chevrolet stolen in Thatcher was found abandoned on Highway 70 west of Lordsburg. A U S Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons pickup stolen from a Tucson prison camp was tied to two escapees captured in Texas.
A Thanksgiving service at Valley View Presbyterian Church featured Mrs. Georgia Lee Browning decorating with crops from the valley including cotton beans onions corn and fruits. The pastor spoke on Thanksgiving Is Every Day and a congregational meeting approved the 1959 budget and elected a nominating committee.
Mrs B M McWhorter aged 80 died at her home in Lordsburg Tuesday morning around 7 15 after a fatal heart attack. The death surprised her family and friends as she had been well and had no recent complaints. An obituary is to appear in the Liberal next week.
