Lordsburgh opens Kranberry's a modern dining venue with seating for 132 and banquet space for 60. Customers waited Tuesday morning as the restaurant began service marking the town’s latest culinary addition.

Moonlight Madness Sale Set For December 4

Local merchants and the Chamber of Commerce promote a Moonlight Madness event on Friday December 4 with extended evening hours and special Christmas prices. The Civic Center mini mall features additional vendors and a tabloid section in The Liberal. Jim Worthan reports his restaurant will employ about 35 staff, joining Jim's Restaurant and Nugget Lounge as Lordsburg's largest payroll. The restaurant will run 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM offering a full menu including Thanksgiving Day.

Siepel Chosen Outstanding Young Man of America

Charles E. Siepel, Hidalgo County Extension Agent, is named in the 1987 Outstanding Young Men of America. He and his family settled in Lordsburg in 1983 and he holds leadership roles with Farm Bureau, Soil and Water, and 4-H groups while serving as secretary to the Bootheel Search and Rescue and volunteering with the Lordsburg Fire Department. Siepel is a 1975 New Mexico State University graduate with a BS in Agribusiness Management and a 1977 MS. he has chaired finance committees and serves as Southwest District Representative for County Agent Association. The OYMA program honors men ages 21 to 36 for community service and professional achievement from 150,000 nominations nationwide.

Gray Ranch Possible Refuge Sparks County Debate

The Gray Ranch may become a national wildlife refuge after Hidalgo County meetings show tension between local ranchers and Phelps Dodge Corp. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Frank Dunkle says he has discussed the proposed transfer with state officials but will not comment on negotiations.

Election to choose new director for aging agency board

The Southwestern New Mexico Area Agency on Aging will elect a Board of Directors member on Thursday December 3 1987. Ballots will be at the Hidalgo County Clerk Courthouse and the Hidalgo County Senior Citizens Building with ballots and candidate names available at the polls. Candidates are George Forsyth Lordsburg and Dr. Robert Scholes Rodeo. The position represents Hidalgo County Senior Citizens Programs on the agency board.
