Senator Chavez Dies in Washington at 74

United States Senator Dennis Chavez of New Mexico died suddenly at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D C at age 74. He had battled cancer and undergone cobalt treatments since 1961 with a prior stomach cancer operation about 14 years earlier. Chavez served in the U S Senate since 1935 and chaired key budget and defense committees. Funeral services were held in New Mexico after lying in state in Santa Fe. Governor Mechem will name a successor, with possible nominees including Lt. Gov Bolack and Dr Jack Redman. the appointment lasts until the 1964 election.

Chamber of Commerce Elects Four New Directors

Chamber of Commerce members elected four directors to three year terms beginning January 1. Franklin Bowman Olen Monroe Howard Phillips named top votes. Retiring president Gilbert Buvens also noted. Officers for next year to be chosen from board at December meeting. Holdovers include McGhee Kimbley Parker Michaels Rice and Pevevers.

Pilo Beltri Visits Parents During 20 Day Furlough

Sgt. Porfirio S. Beltri spends a 20 day furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. A Beltri in Lordsburg. He has completed three years of overseas service in Germany England Spain Holland France and Italy. After leave he will be stationed at Andrews AFB Washington D C.

Surgery Update on Dr. H. W. Sellers at St. Joseph’s

Dr. H. W. Sellers underwent major surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson on Monday and is reported to be getting along satisfactorily. He is now in room 121.

Hidalgo Pioneer Recollections Published in December

The Gold Lettered Egg and Other New Mexico Tales by Ted Raynor of Las Cruces will be released the first week of December. The paperback, printed by Superior Printing in El Paso, includes over 40 stories from Hidalgo and neighboring counties with photographs and cartoons.

Maverick Campaign Nearing Completion

The Lordsburg High School annual campaign for the 63 Maverick ad space is near finish. Under Jill Bowman and Mrs. Jennins Jarvis funds raised include 728 from Lordsburg, 103 from Silver City, and 7 from Deming.

Woman's Club Meeting In Lordsburg Urges Attendance

Mrs. C. C. Fuller, president of Lordsburg Woman's Club, urges all women to attend a meeting Tuesday November 27 at the Woman's Club to hear the Girl State delegates. The session starts at 7 30 p m and all friends are urged to attend.

Local Boy Joins Group for Spearfishing Holiday Trip

Eleven students from New Mexico Tech including Wayne Smith of Lodsburg travel with two NM staff members to the Gulf of California near Guaymas Mexico for Thanksgiving underwater diving spear fishing sailboating. They will use diving tanks pneumatic and spring spears and cameras for underwater photos under James McGettigan supervision with Dr Wayne Ohline also joining.

Jesse Washburn Dies In Phoenix After Illness

Jesse J. Washburn born February 14 1892 in New Mexico died after an extended illness in Phoenix Arizona on November 12. He was a cowboy and miner and later ran a shoe repair shop in Globe Arizona. He is survived by two sisters Emma Chenoweth of National City California and Ida Franklin of Douglas Arizona. Graveside services were held at Valley View Cemetery at 4 p m Thursday November 15 officiated by Rev Bowman of Bisbee Arizona. Pallbearers were Earl Smith Arnold Nard Tom Kerr Buster McCants Jake McCants and Elmer Franklin. Heather Mortuary handled arrangements.

Lions Hear Talk On Dangers Of Finding Live Ammunition

Lions club heard Lt. D J Westmuss of the 133rd Ordnance group Ft Biles explain dangers when civilians find unexploded shells and explosives. Specialist Richard Porcopio aided the display as Olen Monroe arranged the program, stressing immediate reporting to authorities and noting live ammunition may be common from firing ranges.

Development Officials Offer Suggestions for Lordsburg

State Development Department officials met with Lordsburg residents and chamber members at El Charro Restaurant to discuss attracting industry. Dick Bittmann and Milt Andrus led the session, urging small groups to plan specific projects and assess land, utilities, and ownership before sending ideas to officials. About 64 people attended.

Mrs. Kipp Discusses 1870s Great Diamond Swindle

Mrs. Rex Kipp Sr of Lordsburg spoke to the Luna County Historical Society in Deming on the Great Diamond Swindle of the 1870s. Herman Lindauer also presented, recounting a tale of a wagon journey from Denver to Silver City and the 1871 reveal by geologist Clarence King that the mines at Shakespeare had been salted.
