John F Simms and Gov elect L Mechem announce a special election date to fill the late U S Representative vacancy. The move follows a personal conference and consent from both leaders amid party rules and notice concerns.
Johnnie Ochoa of the 4% recruiting station announced a visit to Lordsburg on November 29 1956 to guarantee aviation applicants an aviation school slot. He will be at the post office from 9 A M to recruit volunteers for aviation occupation quotas and the aviation program.
AMS reports New Mexico prospective cotton production rose by 5 000 bales to 285 000 in October with a 764 pound per acre yield. U S total crop estimated at 13 153 006 bales, about one percent below last month’s forecast.
The Lordsburg Senior Band, with 73 students from eighth through twelfth grade, will open its season Saturday evening in the Central School gym. Many members have been in the all state band and the group is known as one of the hardest working in the district. Rehearsals occur before school and on Monday nights.

The Virden Ward of the LDS Church dedicated a new chapel and classrooms after remodeling costing about $62,000. A large audience attended the Sunday evening service with a full program including a ladies trio, organ solo, male quartet, poems, remarks by church leaders, and dedicatory address. The new facilities place Virden among the region’s newest church buildings.
Nineteen hopefuls, including nine lettermen, report to early conditioning at New Mexico Western College fieldhouse for the coming season. Under new head coach Jim Smith a 1953 Western grad. Prospects include freshmen Mack Pace and Willis Lopez of Lordsburg.
The LHS senior and junior classes contest a football classic at the stadium with 7:30 kickoff. Senior captains Gayle Busselle and Pat Rhodes lead, junior captains Becky Turrentine and Mary Louise Chavez direct, Oscar Diaz coaches the juniors, and Ralph Craig, Bob Henning, and Jesse Austin officiate. Admission is 40 cents for adults.

Regional meeting in Las Cruces drew about 50 people from Grant Luna Hidalgo Dona Ana and Otero counties to kick off the polio drive. State and local officials urged fundraising and women and teenage volunteers to join the effort for the January start.
Work began toward organizing a Ground Observer Corps post in Lordsburg. A City Hall meeting Tuesday night drew supporters and Boy Scouts, with M/Sgt Albert F. Carter of the Air Force Tucson Filter Center showing training films. Mrs Leslie Scherling was named chief observer to recruit at least 200 volunteers committing one hour weekly.
