Ten Start Oiling Fort Forty Miles Of Highway

The State Highway Department will begin oiling forty miles of road from Lordsburg toward Deming and toward the Arizona border on the Lordsburg Duncan highway. District Engineer Sam P. Fulton issued final orders for two stretches, with crews to work from Lordsburg, noting Hidalgo County’s favorable treatment by the State Highway Commission.

Thieves Loot Neighborhood During Thursday Night Visit

Thieves invaded the Sixth and High Streets area last Thursday night stealing from several residents. Mrs Hale Chenowth’s Chevrolet was stripped of gasoline and tools, Jesse Washburn’s bunk lost tools and a rear view mirror, and items from Harry Rosenstein’s line were stolen. A muddy flashlight was left behind as the burglars fled.

Mathews Sells Interest in Lordsburg Cafe

Frank Mathews sells his stake in Lordsburg Cafe Inc to partner Mr. Johnson who now runs the business. Mathews has left for Arizona and will return to maintain an office as a York Life Insurance representative. He helped remodel the cafe and plans to make Lordsburg his home.

Lister Takes Over Nellie Gray Group in Lordsburg District

A. Lister has assumed control of the Nellie Gray group of mining claims located five miles south of Lordsburg in the Virginia Mining District. The properties lie between the Frakly Killebrew Honney Pacific Copper Co and 8 Calumet and Arizona Mining Co. locals shipped about ten thousand tons of gold silver copper ore in October to El Paso and Douglas smelters, with Lordsburg mines recording production of over one million three hundred thousand tons and rising.

County Assessor L A Jones and deputy L A Hradberry reported from a State Tax Assessors meeting in Albuquerque that Hidalgo County is doing well. H B Harding of the Southern Pacific Tax Department noted the county’s tax rate of 0.209 while Lordsburg is 0.68 and Bernalillo County 5.27 with Arizona counties Graham 5.57 and Greenlee 4.50. state officials praised Hidalgo’s handling of finances.

Endurance Driver Here Tuesday

Gere, an endurance driver from Los Angeles, arrived Tuesday after a long trip that started in Los Angeles and visited Miami and Lordaburg. He travelled 14 570 miles and endured nine days of mud and rain between Morgan City and Lake Charles, driving a 1995 Oakland car said to be unrepaired.
