Public notice states deadlines must be moved forward due to upcoming holidays. Liberal authorities urge cooperation to adjust schedules, with Wednesday identified as the revised submission day for all deadlines.
Hidalgo County property owners face 1980 taxes totaling about 2.07 million dollars across 3,054 bills, with a rate of 26.199 per thousand inside Lordsburg. First half due on receipt and delinquent December 5. second half due April 1981 with delinquency May 5. Penalties and interest accrue monthly.
The Lordsburg City Council voted Monday to proceed with a special election on a proposed gross receipts tax increase after validating about 229 signatures. Mayor pro tem Steve Hill was absent, and most members supported the election while Maura Rice opposed. No election date set yet and potential council seat fillings were discussed but dropped. An engineer to evaluate gas and water systems was to be interviewed after a prior hire by Mayor Alan Koff.
Rice favors attorney opinion on nullifying the vote due to information gaps. Clark Smith seeks legal input. Collins doubts chances to set aside but supports a formal opinion. Ramirez and Alvarez back leaving the result intact. Koff suggests potential suit given the long elapsed time.
New members elected to the Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce Board on November 13, 1980 include Kim Alexander Russell Atkinson Paul Hasselquist Linda Schulz and Jim Worthan Installation of officers is set for December 11 at 7 30 p m at the next regular meeting
The BLM Mobile Office returns this month offering services at KOA Campgrounds Lordsburg on November 18, Deming on November 19, and Sunrise Shopping Center El Paso on November 20. Staff will provide general information maps booklets and brochures and will offer sale of State Recreation maps Gila National Forest maps and Gila Wilderness and Black Range Primitive Area maps.
The Animas Panthers captured their second consecutive Class AA volleyball crown by defeating Jal 15 10 and 15 8 in the final. Coach Charles Richardson led a largely rebuilt lineup with two holdovers Amber Rudiger and Kate Kerr instrumental in the title run after beating Estancia to reach the final.
The Bureau of Land Management designates 1,033,109 acres in New Mexico as Wilderness Study Areas marking the end of the inventory phase begun in 1976. Sixty two WSAs will be studied for potential wilderness or removal with public input sought and decisions due by 1987. Areas include Dona Ana West Potrillo Mountains and several others across multiple counties.
ASCS Election ballots go to eligible voters on November 20 1980 for a December 1 1980 vote. Top three win chairs with alternates, tabulation on December 8, convention December 15 to elect 1981 officers, with office start January 1 1981. DMV closed November 28 29 for Thanksgiving.
