Local notices promote a Christmas sale scheduled for November 25 in Hidalgo County. Community leaders including Mrs. Jack Heather and Mrs. Earle Kerr contribute to fundraising efforts to support Hidalgo County residents, with Homer Rountree listed as chairman.
A Silver City resident, 56, supervisor for Community Pub Service Co and brother of Donald Johnson, died in a head on collision 27 miles west of Las Cruces on U S Highway 70 80 after 4 30 p m Tuesday. A Mexican resident, 46, and a Juarez man were hurt. Witnesses said the driver was on the wrong side of the road and investigators suspect a heart attack may have contributed to the crash.
A new PTA unit formed in Mexico with Mrs Harber presiding at the first meeting in the new high school building. The program featured child development films and a short program. The group plans to meet again in January.
Five local musicians join the Grant Symphony Orchestra for a concert at Central Gymnasium in this city on Friday evening, November 28 at 8 p m. Tickets available at the door. Reading left to right the local players are Roger Brand bandmaster at Lordsburg schools Miss Joy Tina Miss Pam Crouch Miss Ginger Duerson and Miss Barbara White. The Moctezuma Club sponsors a Forget Me Not sale on Saturday November 22 to raise funds for the Disabled American Veterans rehabilitation program for Korea War veterans and all wars. Club volunteers assist the DAV in the sale and urge residents to buy and wear the flowers as tribute to disabled veterans of Lordsburg.
Sam Tenney announced he will join the Jack Morgan Agency to sell BMA life hospital health and accident insurance and real estate in the area. He currently works at Union Department store and will continue there until after Christmas. Tenney previously worked with Guarantee Reserve Insurance Co.
The Shakespeare Council of Girl Scouts sponsored a Court of Awards on February 14 at the Central school cafeteria. About 80 Girl Scouts from nine troops attended with 70 parents. First Class, Second Class and Tenderfoot badges were awarded to multiple scouts including Mary Ann Culberson and Wanda Wilder, with merit badges in cooking, decor, health, drawing, and more.
Principal J B NisAlister announces the Taft Mavericks game scheduled for Thanksgiving Day has been canceled due to injuries among players and lack of power on the team. The decision was made with the consent of Clifton.
The Lordsburg Woman's Club held a Monday afternoon review of Ruth Cranston's World Faiths. Six faiths were presented by speakers including Mrs. M. H. Brooks and Mrs. James R. Badgett. The program emphasized understanding other religions to foster peace and closer human ties.
The Chamber of Commerce held a Monday meeting on Nov 17 to finalize the election of directors for three year terms. H H Bryant ae Morgan and KE M Fisher were elected and will take office at the first meeting in January 1954.
A sequence of crashes occurred about 11 AM eight miles east of town amid high winds and dust. Bert Hanlon of Milwaukee led a slowdown caused by poor visibility, colliding with six vehicles owned by Ben Burchard of Sweetwater. A 1950 Autocar truck driven by J A Johnson of Kilgore struck the convoy, demolishing a target vehicle and injuring none. Max Wetzel of Roswell was rear-ended by a Buick driven by Marvin Francis of Joliet, wounding Mrs Jacqueline Francis with a temple laceration.
