R L Bowen of Fort Worth and Community Service Company honored Bob Poindexter for long faithful service at a November 5 tribute dinner in Silver City New Mexico. Poindexter received a leather encased travelling clock inscribed with his name.
A recent meeting of Public Service Co. employees in Silver City honored J R Poindexter Sr of Lordsburg for 40 years of service, making him the company’s oldest employee. A traveling clock was presented at the dinner, with remarks from R L Bowen, president and general manager.
Persons driving vehicles with expired or missing stickers will receive fines. Stickers may be obtained at Smith Ford Co Miller Chevrolet Hidalgo Garage or Durfee's Garage in New Mexico State Police jurisdiction.
Community Chorus announces rehearsal dates at the high school room on November 23 at 7 30 p m November 28 at 4 p m and December 2 at 7 30 p m, inviting members to attend and practice.
Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday so The Liberal will publish on Wednesday of next week. Merchants and correspondents must submit advertising and news to The Liberal office by Tuesday noon.
Scott T. Spencer of Lordsburg and New Mexico A and M was selected among twenty six students for Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges. Selection was based on scholarship and campus activities with nomination by deans and final pick by the Student Commission. Spencer, a Lordsburg High School Salutatorian, completed four years of study in three, entering NM A and M in 1951 as a freshman.
The Teenage Canteen returns tonight at the Elks Hall on East Second Street after a summer break. A meeting starts at seven followed by dancing for teens ages thirteen to eighteen. mothers are urged to attend each Friday event.
Fort Sumner stopped the Mavericks 7 to 6 in a game decided by a late point after touchdown attempt. Oscar Diaz returned a punt for Lordsburg to set up a six yard line rush, while Jordan broke free for Fort Sumner on a 45 yard run. The second half remained defensive with no scoring.
The Lordsburg Senior Band will perform Friday December 3 at 8:00 pm in the high school study hall. The 67 piece ensemble features Patsy Crouch on piano and Janice Malott on clarinet with a program ranging from modern tunes to Van Sappe's Light Cavalry Overturne. A Sousa centennial tribute includes select marches.
President Eisenhower and Governor Mechem announce a nationwide December campaign on traffic safety. Lordsburg Mayor Kimbley proclaims December 16 as safe driving day and designates Chief of Police Lalo Sanchez as director for the city to promote a 24 hour period of December 19, 1954 aimed at reducing traffic accidents.
Mrs. Digneo told Lordsburg Schools faculty that report cards are out of date and should be discontinued. Ellen Hartnett Digneo, longtime Drake University alumna and current Director of Teacher Education at the New Mexico State Department of Education in Albuquerque, spoke on how teachers should report to parents. She argued the old card system invites trouble and only motivates students who expect good marks.
The final performance of the Junior Class play We Shook the Family Tree by Hildegarde Dolson is tonight at 7:39 in the high school auditorium. Cast includes Lula Graham Mary Yacamo Marilee Parsons Norris Nard Bill Packer Sue Mee Carty Benny Williams George Smith Carolina Alvarez Jean Frazier Myrna Lunt Frank Martinez. All are urged to attend.
The Lordsburg Maverick basketball season opens at home on November 26 against Hatch Here with 33 candidates, two daily practices, and head coach Jim Smith aiming to refine a shorter taller squad. The schedule includes 20 games, 11 away, plus the New Mexico Western Tournament at Silver City and District 4-B events.
J. R. Badgett, chairman of the Finance Committee, reports the Girl Scout drive ended Wednesday evening with net proceeds of 238 44 dollars. A full report will be issued next week and more money is anticipated later this week.
