Ruth Cohen of Lordsburg New Mexico won first prize in the state slogan contest sponsored by the New Mexico Loyalty Committee of Albuquerque. She received a cash prize of 50 dollars for her winning slogan Buy It In New Mexico.
Winners announced in the New Mexico Buy Build Boost slogan contest with Mrs Ruth Cohen of Lordsburg taking first prize. State officials and judges from Albuquerque and Estancia selected the top entry and plan statewide use on stationery and advertising during New Mexico Products Week November 15 to 20.
An appeal to the New Mexico Supreme Court challenges a death sentence in State v. Romero. District Judge Geo y presides. Jesus Re is the convicted killer, found guilty of first degree murder last June by Navarro County jury. The appeal argues insufficient evidence supported the death penalty and requests a stay of execution pending review.
Church of Christ urges loyalty Sundays with a campaign to lift Christ in song and prayer. Minister Brimberry cites John 12 32 and invites all ages to attend 11 am service and 7 30 pm study titled Look to Jesus across the community and nation.
Junior class presents Good Gracious a three act comedy. Tryouts were held Wednesday night with results announced next week by judges Mearns Miss Connell and others.
The Division of Grazing in the Department of Interior holds hearings in Lordsburg on land controversies under the Taylor Act. The sessions draw many interested parties and inquiries about grazing land.
The Southern Methodist University football squad led by Matty Bell stopped at Lordsburg on their way to play UCLA in Lower California. The visit drew many locals at the station and included plans for a brief workout in the University of Arizona stadium once in Tucson. Mrs Elizabeth Winters has long known the coach and greeted him.
Mrs Donald Johnson hosted a Tuesday afternoon gathering with a one o clock luncheon and a bridge game. Guests included Mrs L B Robinson Mrs Harold Rolfe Mrs W F Winters Mrs R E Bavens Mrs C B Austin Miss Isabel Herndon Mrs B E Allen and guest Maude Blunt. Mrs Winters won first prize and Mrs Robinson took the consolation.
Church services listed with Rev. Bryan Hall as pastor. Sunday worship at 11 am on the theme What Does Christianity Offer Me Personally In This Age. Evening service at 5 30 pm and prayer at 7 pm Wednesday with choir rehearsal at 7 30 pm. Church School at 9 45 am.
Dr Vinsons Bible class at the Methodist church each Sunday at ten draws crowds from Lordsburg Deming Silver City and Hidalgo county. He discusses how the Bible came into existence from memory with board demonstrations, many young people attend for rare knowledge of biblical origins.
County superintendent of schools Mrs Agnes Edington traveled to Santa Fe on Wednesday with Mrs Naomi Brown. Edington returned Saturday while Brown proceeded to Las Cruces to visit Mrs Dixie Adams for several days.
William Johnson of Kingston and Deming visited Lordsburg on Friday. He formerly worked in Mexican mining and now runs fluorspar mining and milling near Deming with associates. Johnson inspected the new Lordsburg mill operated by Mr. Stuler and discussed the Knever mill project with L K Diffenderfer.
Clara Gustafson of Normal Illinois writes to a Liberal representative praising Lordsburg for its hospitality and delightful environment. She visited her son Herman Gustafson and family recently and plans to bring a friend to visit again this coming summer. She notes the paved highways and favorable impressions from neighboring cities.
The funeral for the late Mrs George W Bailey took place Friday at Heather mortuary in Lordsburg. Rev M C Moore delivered a comforting sermon praising motherhood and a devoted life. A male quartet provided music and pallbearers included George Tyra and others. The burial was in Mountain View cemetery with many family members present.
Colorado attorney J. P. Thomas Jr. of Canon City visited Lordsburg this past week. He met with Stock and Mec Cray to handle legal matters of their mining interests and traveled to California with Mr. Stock to advance the local mining concern.
Mr and Mrs Herman Gustafson visited Miami over the weekend and reported widespread miner layoffs at Globe and Miami. The news is causing concern in local business circles as employment declines impact the region.
Sam A. Henry Jr of El Paso will conduct a Scout School for Lordsburg men on November 29 30 and December 1 2. Sessions start at 7 30 p m in the church undercroft. No textbooks or registration fees. Father and young men are urged to attend.
Mrs. E. L. Jones presented a large stalk of cotton at the chamber of commerce claiming it grew as a volunteer on the Jones ranch without irrigation or cultivation. Cotton growers estimate that an acre of such cotton could yield a bale, illustrating potential drought resistant growth.
George Wright from Animas spent Monday in Lordsburg for unspecified reasons, with activity noted as a local movement or visit.
Three of the new streamlined locomotives passed through Lordsburg on Friday en route to the Pacific coast for passenger service on the Southern Pacific Dawn to Dusk Daylight between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The 14 locomotives cost 1 960 000 in total, were built by American Locomotive Company at Schenectady and assembled in El Paso before entering service.
El Paso cattleman W W Wilkie aged 60 dies suddenly on Armistice Day after returning from an Arizona ranch. Funeral held in El Paso with daughter Mrs Harry Day and family in attendance. Wilkie, a renowned Southwest cattleman with extensive holdings, had sought his wife’s care during illness when he fell ill en route to a clinic. His mother is still living.
The W. M. U. of the Baptist church met at Mrs Herman Gustafson's home this week with Mesdames Pease Jones Gas Corbell Moore and Capps attending. After the 4 Gospels lesson, refreshments of prune whip cake and punch were served.
The Past Matron's Club of the Eastern Star met with Mrs. A. L. Green last Thursday. Attendees included Mesdames Sam Gass I. C. Conner B. M. Chase J. H. Clark Gee Trimble Chas. Puller Mae Hanner Olivia Wells and the hostess. A delicious enchilada supper followed the social hour.
Miss Ruth Wood of Deming spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Wood.
J. McCaull a prominent California businessman and Mrs McCaull stopped in Lordsburg en route from the Atlantic coast. He reported to the chamber that two places on their West Virginia to California journey had the purest water, Lordsburg and Sherman Texas.
The topic Peace was discussed last Sunday and three joined, bringing the group to thirty four. Next Sunday will cover Thanksgiving with invitations for the Co EB banquet on November 23 at 7 pm in the church Sunday School rooms.
The Lions Club met Tuesday at noon with President Augustine presiding. They discussed aiding Carrie Tingley Hospital for crippled children and arranging amusement for the patients. Secretary Taggart to coordinate with hospital authorities. Lions consider procuring glasses for Lordsburg children. Holt to accept luncheons from CCC camps for the club and Lionesses. Hall notes Boy Scout activity referenced elsewhere.
A. P. Rosser of Separ was bound over to the spring term of the District Court in Grant county at Bilver City after a preliminary hearing. He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon for striking Lee Baker of Separ with the barrel of a gun over disputed land boundaries. Rosser was released on a $1,000 bond pending district court action.
Robert Dewey, formerly of Texas and East Lake City, is the new office man at the Banner mine. An expert Topographer, he previously worked with the U. S. Geological Survey and has moved his family to Lordsburg, residing in a Leonard apartment on South Main.
The N. and T. club will meet at the ranch home of Mrs. Elbert Jones next Tuesday. The gathering will discuss upcoming activities and community plans for the month.
Conoco representatives from Deming Silver City Lake Valley Hot Springs Hateh and Las Cruces attend a district sales meeting presided by KE Warnhart at the Hidalgo Hotel. Supt. Barnhart reports state wide business growth and estimates Conoco Tourado travelers spent over one million dollars in New Mexico. Next meeting set for Las Cruces.
Word from Mrs Ralph Smith that she is nearly recovered from her illness and recuperating at her parents home in Nashville Tennessee. She expects to return to Lordsburg during the coming week.
Hidalgo county officers nabbed a stranger named Glen Turk for attempting to break into Lordsburg high school after being alerted to the plot. Turk faced a preliminary hearing and was bound over to the April district court term, with bond set at 1000 dollars. In a separate late Wednesday incident, D A Dunn robbed west of Lordsburg after a bar encounter, and Ray Rhodes and Nellie Rhodes were jailed or released on recognizance following hearings. The sheriff praised the swift resolution of both cases.
Mesdames Felix Gauthier and Viola Wright from Animas visited Lordsburg on Monday to attend a Woman's Club meeting.
J P Church district highway engineer visited this week for an inspection tour of the district.
Jay N. Ding, president of the General Wildlife Federation, and Frederick F. Jordan, director of National Wildlife Restoration Week, report a surge of volunteers and a broad movement to restore wildfowl breeding grounds. They cite the Malhuer Lake project in Oregon restoring over fifty native bird species as a sign of progress ahead of National Wildlife Restoration Week next March.
Members of the Lordsburg Business and Professional Women's Club held an Inventory Meeting led by chairwoman Mrs Matilda Jones. A program by A Crider followed, highlighting ownership types and community assets with new members elected and plans set for December meeting.
In the early evening of November 10 Junior Chase celebrated his birthday and his first deer. Mrs 8 M Chase with Hort prepared and served a seven o clock pension dinner for friends. Attendees included Marion Fisher Gordon Kimbly Billie Kimbly Pete Chase Marshall Puller and others.
County nurse Miss Eleanor O Meara attends a three day state health forces convention in Albuquerque with public nurses district health officers and others. She drove from Silver City to Albuquerque early Thursday with district sanitary inspector W H Bolton via the Black Range highway.
Mr. and Mrs. Cade Wright of Animas are spending the week in Lordsburg while repairs are carried out on their residence.
