Hidalgo Smelter Overhaul Makes It World Class
In July Phelps Dodge began a four month overhaul at the Playas Smelter in the desert of Hidalgo County. The plant, in operation since 1976, produced 1.64 billion pounds of copper in its runs and more than two million copper anodes. The shutdown renovated the flash furnace and auxiliary facilities, boosting fuel efficiency and lowering sulfuric acid costs. Local Hidalgo Smelter workers shared in the upgrades and gained new skills during the project.

Funds Set for Lordsburg Animal Shelter Expansion
