Beta Sigma Phi Donates $500 for New Hospital

Xi Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi presented Mrs Emma Scofield county clerk with a $500 check to be matched by Hill Burton funds. The money comes from rummage sales and Money Doll raffles to furnish a double room in the maternity section of the new hospital, and Beta Sigma Phi also provided a room in the present hospital to be moved to the new facility.

Annual Farm Bureau Convention Opens November 25 at NMSU

About 1,000 farmers and ranchers are expected as delegates to New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau’s annual convention November 25-28 at Milton Hall on the New Mexico State University campus. The gathering will elect district and state officers, hear speeches by Dr. James Jauncey and Dr. Warren Collins, and feature tours, contests, and awards culminating in a Wednesday business session.

Spencer Jones Wins In Speaking Contest

Spencer Jones of Virden representing Duncan School FPA won first place in the Gila Southern Public Speaking Contest held November 7, 1962, at Safford High School auditorium with Farm Safety. Dennis B. Fenn of Benson took second, Billy Tingle of Wilcox third, with seven participants total. The team opens an 18-game schedule including nine Class 4-B conference games hosting Reserve on November 30 and competes in the Silver City Invitational January 4-5 and the District 4-B Tournament at Hot Springs February 22-23.

The American College test for entrance and placement was given in Silver City at the College on Saturday November 10. Janaloo and her father Frank Hill rode from Gila Bend to Sentinel Arizona on a horseback trip toward the west coast. They expect to reach Yuma by the weekend.

Topographic Mapping Ender Way In Lordsburg Vicinity

Four engineering field parties of the Topographic Division of the Geological Survey map 1000 square miles near Lordsburg this winter. Project details include aerial photography based mapping, control points, and field checks with local cooperation requested. Copies and maps are available from the Denver center and regional engineer Roland H. Moore can provide information.

Civil Defense Education Program Continues

The second Civil Defense Class will meet Monday evening November 19 at seven in Room 10 at Lordsburg High School with Jesse Austin presenting A Closer Look at Nuclear Energy. A film and slides will be shown to stimulate discussion and encourage new adults to join and support local civil defense plans.

The Community Thanksgiving Services will be held at the First Baptist Church on Thursday November 22 at 10:00 a.m. Rev W C Strickland of the Methodist Church will give the message. A special offering will support the Church and Community Service Fund for transient relief. Everyone is invited.
