Patriotic Armistice Day Program Highlights Maverick Band

The American Legion marks Armistice Day with Prof W T leading ceremonies. Legionaires Mayfield and a Junior Auxiliary group perform patriotic songs as Moselle Messecar introduces tributes. Speaker E Vinson recalls the 1918 armistice and stresses American ideals, with Joe Chavez playing taps and a flag tribute concluding the event.

Shindig Planned For Volleyball Girls Benefit

Next Tuesday night in the gym from 8 to 9 30 PM a mothers and women’s party for the volleyball girls will feature supper and games. Mrs F H Singer is general chairwoman with Miss in charge of arrangements and Mrs Messecar handling publicity. Organizers hope many women and girls attend.

Methodist Conference at Local Church Sunday Sermon

Rev. Joe Emanuel of the El Paso District will preach at 11 a m and lead the first quarterly conference at 2 30 p m. A large congregation is expected as plans and policies for the new year are outlined by the Methodist church.

Red Cross Roll Call Set To Begin November 18

Miss Kathryn B. Monroe of St. Louis appointed Mrs. J Br Poindexter as Roll Call director with Mrs. E M Brickley as assistant. Roll Call to start Monday with precinct captains named and goals to complete by month end. Roosevelt urges continuing peace time Red Cross work and readiness for disasters. Precinct chairmen to be announced next week.

Lions Club Meeting Features Vinson Address and Plan Debate

An unusually good Lions Club meeting in Lordsburg had Lion President Tom J. Mayfield presiding. Dr Robert F E Vinson gave a scholarly talk linking Armistice Day themes to modern civilization, warning of threats from Hitler and urging production driven consumption as a remedy. The gathering also debated Bali Java dancers profitability and announced an El Paso goodwill motorcade and Y M C A Pacific Area Conference in Lordsburg, with a patriotic original song dedicated to longtime Lion Willard Holt.

District meeting of El Paso churches reviewed reforms

Rev J T Emanuel and others attended a district meeting of El Paso churches Tuesday held in El Paso with a luncheon at seven o clock. Dr W E Brown presided as Rev John Crowe Rex Strickland and E F Bohmfolk spoke on church organization lay works and financial structure. The group returned to Lordsburg Tuesday night.

Selective Draft Notices Issued by Hidalgo County Board

Secretary Miss Billie Steed reports 200 questionnaires mailed and 177 classified by the Selective Draft Board. Notification will be by mail or via the City Clerk’s office. Questionnaires must be ink or typewritten, no other official records accepted. Hidalgo County Tuberculosis Association funds raised at Christmas, but work continues year round.

Devi Dja Bali Dance Troupe to Open 1940 41 Series

The New Mexico State Teachers College hosts Devi Dja and the Bali and Java Dancers in the opening Artists and Lectures course. Twelve native dancers and five musicians perform at the larger high school auditorium on Monday evening. The act, praised by critics, features Mas Totok’s gamelan ensemble and authentic Balinese costumes and mythic storytelling as part of a two hour cultural revue.

Library board meets to approve bulletin board and orders

The Lordaburg Hidalgo Library board held its regular meeting on Monday November 4 with president Mrs Bethel Fuller presiding. A new cellotex bulletin board was purchased and 63 books are to be ordered for the school. New pay books include Invitation To Live Yor Who The Bell Tolls The Fan Encyclopedia. F T Club Plans Christmas Meeting Nomination Committee

The F. T. Club met at Mrs. R R Lewis home with ten members and two guests. A Christmas meeting was planned for December and a nominating committee was appointed. Refreshments included jello salad and tea wafers.

The Pacific Southwest Area YMCA district holds its fourth conference in Lordsburg with participants from Texas New Mexico Arizona and California arriving October 16. A bio Pacific Greyhound train bearing El Paso boosters halted in Lordsburg Thursday for about an hour en route from Silver City to Tucson for the Arizona premiere. Lloyd F. Bloodworth led the group of business leaders and newspaper reps with Joe Evans remaining until Lordsburg.

American Legion Auxiliary Meeting Notices Social Plans

The American Legion Auxiliary met November 6 at Mrs. Nell Melnnis home with Mrs. Alma Carson as co host. Ten members attended and a brief business meeting was followed by social time and refreshments. Guest Mrs. Adams of Animas attended. Next meeting will be December 4 at Mrs. E M Brickley home with Mrs. Ena Walter co hostess and a Christmas theme. The ladies will serve refreshments to Legion men after their meeting.

On November 9 the American Legion Auxiliary hosted a luncheon in the Methodist church undercroft for Armistice Day, with Mrs. Ena Walter and Opal Downing in charge. Twelve attended a decoratively set meal. Barbara Stokes joined as a new Junior member. The Junior group met beforehand outlining plans for December activities and a Christmas exchange.

Church Presents Play Mrs Gray Of Lonesome Mountain

Sunday evening November 17 a twenty minute play Mrs Gray Of Lonesome Mountain will be presented at the Church of Christ set in the Kentucky mountains. Mra Pat Ewing stars as missionary mother with five children in the cast and Mrs Cal Atkinson with Carolyn Ruth play mountain woman and daughter. Actors include Fred Ewing and Claude Allen Broun. Everyone is welcome.

Spencer Tracy Appears in Palace Film for Tuberculosis Drive

Academy Award winner Spencer Tracy stars in a special one minute message at the Palace theatre urging public support for the local Tuberculosis Association Seal Campaign. The event marks the first time a Hollywood personality has lent a film to the drive.
