Local event organizers announce an annual arts and crafts show and sale to be held December 12 and 13. Vendors from area studios will display pottery textiles jewelry woodwork and paintings. Proceeds support community arts programs and youth scholarships.
Tayopa Mining and Milling Inc opens a mill on West A Street in Lordsburg, Hidalgo County. The site has hosted mills for 40 years. ore mined from Little Charles, Top of the World, Hobo, and Middle Charles is milled to lead-silver concentrate and bullion. The four workers have first aid and MSHA Part 48 training, plus open-pit blasting courses. Raul F. de Castro is president.
The Health Systems Agency District V Subarea Council selects its Annual Implementation Plan for 1981-82 to convert Hidalgo County General Hospital into a multiuse health care facility by April 1982. The vacant hospital would house health agencies and support local services as Hidalgo County faces doctor shortages.
The Hidalgo County Extension Homemakers Council schedules its annual Arts and Crafts Show for December 12 and 13 at Lordsburg Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily open to all. Booths sold first come first served, display setup on December 11, and booths must be cleaned by 6 p.m. December 13. For details contact Shirley Romero or Judy Chase. Also the Animal Board of Education will meet on November 19, 1980 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elementary Library.
Hidalgo County seeks to abandon three road segments on Pacific Western Land and Cattle Company land prompting BLM District Manager Dan Rathbun to oppose closing as it would cut public access for recreation exploration hunting and other uses. Game and Fish asks for justification and potential county economic benefits while commissioners cite man hours and equipment transport.
A 23 year old serviceman from Dyess Air Force Base Texas died Saturday night when his vehicle collided with a semi on I 10 veered off the roadway and overturned State Police attributed the death to loss of control during the crash involving Brian W Grant the eastbound vehicle owner and victim
Court Update approved a July 21 1979 project to monitor all New Mexico magistrate courts funded by an 18000 LEAA grant with 2000 matching by the state Supreme Court. Volunteers will be trained two per court for eight weeks in the Sixth Judicial Area including Silver City Bayard Lordsburg and Deming.
Three men face fines totaling about 1490 for wildlife law violations in Hidalgo Santa Fe and Colfax counties. Myron J. Eggman and Mike D. Eggman were fined 250 each plus 10 court costs for illegal furbearer pelts and unmarked traps. A separate case fined Carson W. Peek 400 and Matt L. Whetsell 400 for false information to obtain licenses.
About 300 ranch families are expected for the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association fourth quarterly meeting in Deming November 30 to December 2. Sessions at Ramada Inn and Holiday Inn feature guest Gene Lamberson and discussions on ova transfer and marketing, with registration starting November 31 in the Ramada lobby.
Lordsburg faces a possible referendum as over 200 voters sign a petition to require a vote on a planned one percent increase in the gross receipts tax. City officials approved the increase set for July 1, 1981, but the petition may force a public vote under state law.
