County commissioners press for explanations of first quarter spending as lines run over 30 percent of budgets. Commissioner David Ramos calls for department heads to justify purchases and budgeting plans with the county manager, amid a tightened budget. Treasurer Victor Ornelas notes the remaining funds, with continuation on page 2.
US Department of Agriculture officials confirm Africanized honey bees in Hidalgo County. Bees were found dead October 31 in an old fire on a farm near Cotton City. Charlie Siepel of NMSU Extension sent specimens to NMDA in Las Cruces for identification to confirm the preliminary finding.
Lordsburg hosts Moonlight Madness on December 3 with a new home for the mini mall booths at SCS Enterprises 116 Motel Drive run by Doddie Conover. Booths cost 5 dollars and must be reserved via the Chamber of Commerce 542 9864 by November 26.
Nellie Isabell West died November 2 1993 at Fort Bayard born December 30 1938 in Cottonwood Wash Arizona. A former Prescott seamstress she moved to Lordsburg in 1980 and served as dispatcher for Sheriff Gene Moore and cooked at Border Cowboy Restaurant and Ranchhouse Cafe. Survived by three brothers a sister and many nieces and nephews the First Baptist Church funeral was held November 6 with Reverends Coy Brewer and Jesse Liles officiating and burial at Mountain View Cemetery.
Lordsburg City Council approves March 1 1994 as the municipal election date for mayor and four council seats plus municipal judge. Candidacy filings due January 4 1994. Precinct voting at JH Baxter Civic Center. absent precincts vote at City Clerk office. The council rejects an Animal Sterilization Ordinance and a vaccination ordinance 484. The vote on sterilization tied 4 4 with the mayor breaking the tie. Mayor Diaz cites state law as governing sterilization. Water valve bids will be sought for Motel Drive Second Street and A Street with funds from the water improvement pool. The bid covers materials and installation. 20 entries are listed for the December 3 light parade. support requested. No grants for beautification approved.
Twenty five entries have been turned in for this year's light parade on December 3 in conjunction with Lordsburg Moonlight Madness Sale. Co chairmen John Hill and Clark Smith cite generator shortages as a barrier to lighting floats and urge helpers to contact Lopez at 542-9864 with available generators. Entries close November 31.
