Pioneer animal businessman passes away in Paso hospital

A longtime Animas merchant and former postmaster Gauthier Sr. died Sunday in a Paso hospital after a prolonged illness. Born May 12, 1888, in Ever Louisiana, he moved to the Valley in 1908 and co founded Stivers and Gauthier Mercantile Store in Animas in 1909. He served as Postmaster in 1913 and 99 1954, was active in the First Baptist church and Lordsburg Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his widow Pearl Wright Gauthier, sons Felix Gordon and Gauthier, and several grandchildren and relatives. Funeral services were held at Heather Chapel with local ministers officiating and burial in Lordsburg Lodge cemetery. many out of town relatives attended.

The Lions Club weekly meeting at El Charro discussed the annual broom sale and plans to finish it this weekend with trucks parked at several town points. Jeanette Hitson gave a program as a top Future Maker student who attended a national conference in Philadelphia and visited Washington, D. C.

Woman Dies Of Crash Injuries In Separate Accident

Mrs. Inez Margaret McInnis 51 of Mooseheart Ill died at Hidalgo General Hospital from injuries from a Friday night single car crash. Her husband Frank McInnis 54 was hospitalized with severe injuries after their westbound car left the highway and struck a State Highway Dept mowing machine in the median. the car did not overturn. A truck driver reported the McInnis car passed him then veered left off the road.

Cotton Growers to Vote on 1966 Upland Quotas

Farmers will vote November 23 on marketing quotas for the 1966 upland cotton crop. National acreage allotment is 16 million acres with a 15 267 000 bale marketing quota. If two thirds approve, quotas stay. if not, a 50 percent price support remains and the allotment program continues.

Chamber Of Commerce Elects New Directors And Officers

The Chamber of Commerce elected three new directors for three years starting January 1 1966 Richard Dockum C V Nunn and two returning Leo Harris and Howard Phillips were named. At the November 8 meeting Howard Phillips Foodliner Grocery was chosen president Ralph Burton First National Bank becomes vice president Rex Daws is secretary manager. Holdover directors for next year are Harold Bishop Chuck Height Bill Kimbley Jack McGhee Adair Merrell Dave Warren and Ralph Burton.

Post Office At Animas Held Up

Richard Eugene Troye of Reno faces federal charges of attempted robbery at the Animas post office last Friday afternoon. He drew a pistol on the clerk but after Mrs Gauthier offered the money he laid his gun on the counter and fled, then was captured about 15 miles east of Hachita and jailed in Lordsburg pending postal action.

Civil Service Announces New Examinations

The U S Civil Service Commission announces entrance level exams for professional engineers and scientists with salaries from 5990 to 7050 annually. Jobs mainly in DC area laboratories cover research development test and evaluation across engineering chemistry physics and related fields. An Illustrator exam in the Washington area pays 5000 to 10250 with varied experience for public information exhibits advertising or technical illustration.

Mavericks Cap 1965 Season With 34 0 Win Over Hatch Bears

The Lordsburg Mavericks crushed Hatch 34-0 to end the season with a 5 3 1 overall record and 3 1 in league play. Key plays featured a blocked punt by Orlando Estrada, Rodriquez passes to Renteria, and a 52 yard TD run by Renteria. Coach Joe White lauded the squad’s progress and predicted continued improvement next year.
