Open houses set for Lordsburg schools across four days with sessions from 6 to 8 30 p.m. Nov 14 15 16 and 17 including Southside Central Dugan Tarango Middle and Lordsburg High School inviting students and families to tour campuses and meet staff.
Hidalgo County commissioners approved a new personnel policy and salary schedule affecting twelve employees, with each to gain a $75 monthly increase effective November 15 and reflected on the November 31 paycheck. They reviewed job descriptions and policy, left several roads open or tabled decisions, and formed an Indigent Board to determine who qualifies for indigent status. Damages from recent heavy rainfall included repairs to a lone Hidalgo County road at $1,900.
New system adds lobby lockers to expedite delivery of oversized mail. Envelopes marked Notice of Item Too Large for Box contain a key matched to a locker where a large package is stored. The 24 hour lobby allows access any time, with a captive key remaining in the lock after removal.
Emergency designation loans are available from the Farmers Home Administration for Hidalgo and Grant Counties and two other NM counties named by the President. Eligible farmers may borrow up to 80 percent of actual losses or to cover operating needs, with rates from 5 to 13.75 percent depending on access to private credit. Lordsburg Eastern Star Chapter 21 marks its 75th anniversary with officers exemplifying ritual work from 1867. Attire reflects the period as the event kicks off Saturday November 12 at 7 30 p.m. in the Lordsburg Masonic Hall. A reception follows the meeting and all members are invited.
Maria Vargas 72 of Lordsburg died Tuesday November 1 at Hillcrest Hospital Silver City. Born March 22 1911 in Mogollon to Gertrudes and Garcia, she lived in Lordsburg all her life. Survived by husband Marcelo S. Vargas sons Benny Refugio Marcelo Jr Edward Jenny Arambula two sisters Tony Sotelo Isabel Rascon 17 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren. Rosary held November 3 at St Joseph Catholic Church with Mass November 4. Burial Shakespeare Cemetery. pallbearers Jimmy Vargas Memen Vargas Benji Arambula Armando Vargas Tommy Rodriguez Mike Bejarano honorary pallbearers Ruben Bejarano Larry Vargas.
Copper Down Phelps Dodge Corporation announced that effective immediately its base price for whole plate electrolytic copper cathodes will be 66 cents per pound, a decrease of two cents from the present price of 68 cents per pound.

The Merchant Day Bazaar runs November 18 and 19 at the Civic Center with vendors arranging own display tables.
Mayor Hill and Dr. Stephen Ekbund of the University of Michigan discuss a federal funded study on fluoride in water. The project will enroll 200 residents from Lordsburg and Deming and gain national publicity in dental magazines. A Water Supply Construction Act grant for a new well south of town is under state review, with potential annual pumping savings of about $84,000. Bowlin's Inc. proposes six 10 by 40 billboards along I-10, and a Tourist Information Center project is set to begin.
