Hadeco Drive of Membership Reaches 300 Mark

Hidalgo Development Corporation reports over 300 members signed up as of Tuesday with many residents not contacted yet. The drive continues. those not contacted are urged to call the chamber office or submit applications. Smalley Kirk Elected To State Legislature Seats

Hidalgo County voters cast 60 percent in the general election. Doris McCarty was elected sheriff, first woman to win the post in New Mexico. State Senator T. M Smalley won the Hidalgo Luna Sierra district seat by 3,271 to 3,176 over Clif ford Moody. Kirk defeated Tobey for Hidalgo Luna state representative 2,152 to 1,992. Bond issue for college building and amendment abolishing justices of the peace carried statewide. 1,265 votes cast from 2,122 registered.

Chase among 25 candidates for GWU Homecoming Queen

Miss Stephanie Chase of Lordsburg is among twenty five nominees for 1966 Homecoming Queen at George Washington University Washington D C She is a senior in the School of Public and International Affairs a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and the Pre Law Society Entrants will be judged by a panel with five finalists chosen for student body vote during homecoming festivities November 11 and 12.

Mavericks Win Season Closer

Lordsburg Mavericks end 1966 football season with a 16 13 victory over Hatch Bears. Renteria and Sanchez spark late drive, Bas sa and Richardson key receiving, defense clamps down led by Richardson and Gonzales. Mavericks finish five wins five losses and tied for second in conference.

Stella Valdiviezo Named Citizen Of Month

The S. H. S. student council selects Stella Valdiviezo as citizen of the month for citizenship, scholarship, leadership, dependability and service. active in school activities she serves as Pep Club president and belongs to Junior Class FTA FHA and GAA. She plans beauty school after graduating in 1968.

Banner Mine To Cease Operations This Month

Banner Mining Co will close its Lordsburg operations in the latter part of the month. Frank Bowman, mine superintendent, cites rising costs, lower ore grades, and an inability to secure a profitable copper price as the cause. Since June 1995 the mine produced 2 396 544 tons of ore and 114 654 870 pounds of copper, with 11 million plus in wages paid and 6.4 million in power and supplies. The closure affects 100 employees.

The Class of 68 at Lordsburg High will present the play Little Women on Friday November 11 at 7 30 pm in the Cafetorium. Jo is played by Kate Turner Meg by Shirley Hitson Beth by Debbie Kirby and Amy by Karen Newton.
