Bright sun welcomed Hidalgo voters as turnout lagged in most precincts with Hidalgo County and district officials elected largely without opposition. Governor Miles and other statewide offices went Democratic while several Republicans won minor posts.
The Board of Trustees asks all residents owing occupation taxes to pay promptly and notes sewer taxes must be raised soon to close books by year end. About half have paid. more time will be given to taxpayers before drastic action. The Village Clerk can explain the levy’s purpose and terms.
Richard Kent a New Co State College student arrived in Molsbury Friday to visit his aunt Mrs Thomas R Taggart. The group including Mr and Mrs Taggart and Kent spent the weekend with Eva Pendleton in Cloverdale and were entertained by a hunting trip before returning to Burg Sunday afternoon.
The Church of Christ in Lordsburg invites people to attend services at 9 00 a m featuring The Power of Christ and at 7 30 p m with The Highway of Faith. Mrs Clara Powers returned to Douglas after a week visiting relatives including Mrs Rose ers and the Claude Olney family with plans for extended travel to El Paso.
The Lordsburg Board of Trustees approved plans for a Matus Sales Company sales room and garage on Rail Road Avenue. John A. Johnson gained temporary bus parking in front of the Lordsburg Cafe as part of a broader tax collection and paving project discussion. Meeting adjourned to November 14 with routine approvals and department reports.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Bowman traveled to Salt Lake City to visit relatives while Mr Bowman represented the Banner Mine at a mining congress in Los Angeles. They also spent a short period visiting relatives in San Diego before returning home.
The Alumni Association held a homecoming last night at the Coney Island Inn. A banquet was served to members including Marshall Fuller J A Jones Junior Jones Miles Cohen Billy Fisher Billy Kimberly Gordon Kimberly Junior Chase Leo Elms Charley Powers Hacker Heather Walter Mullins and Charley Williams.
Mrs Wilma Schuster succeeds Miss Eleanor O Meara as county health nurse. She comes from Minneapolis Community Health Service with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Minnesota and a Minnesota Public Health nursing certificate. She plans to apply her experience to local health programs while working under District Health Officer Pret Mitchell. Road resurfacing on Railroad Avenue is completed with a new concrete extension project advancing toward Shake Genre and South Streets under WPA supervision.
Friday gathering chaired by Mrs. S M Chase with Mrs P M Chane assisting. Program “Bridging National and Racial Barriers” led by Mrs R T Bonar. Officers elected for 193% including President Mrs R B Sundgren and numerous posts. next meeting November 18 at the Church with Mrs J Malone and Mrs R T Bonar as hosts.
Mrs. Sarah Simpson and her son-in-law George Stokes returned Wednesday after several months in Long Beach Washington, marking a extended stay.
The Junie American Legion Auxiliary held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening at sponsor Mie Moselle Mensecar home. President Doorothy Meinnis presided and routine business was transacted with thanks to Mie Claude Sanders for presenting a set of fluge to the Jumiora. An Armistice Day program was given and refreshments were served by hostess Mary Phile denkine.
Sunday evening service and a Bible drill on holding a grudge with a parish discussion. About twenty children attended a Halloween party at the Christian parsonage with orange and black decorations. Church notes list worship at 9:46 a.m. and 1 a.m. service on Sunday with a sermon on Can a Christian Engage in War. Prayer service follows at 7 p.m. Wednesday and choir practice at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Miss Velma Hill receives farewell tributes from Lordsburg Duncan and Virden friends at the Knights of Pythias hall. George Richins and J Vernon McGrath spoke, gifts were presented, and more than 70 dollars was raised. Refreshments were served as she heads to Salt Lake City for training before missionary work in Atlanta.
The Ritter-Walker office in Hidalgo features six carved pieces in Mexican mahogany. Manager Robinson’s desk, three notes, a filing cabinet and a typewriter stand are displayed as a show feature of the town. The furniture was secured in Mexico by Mr Hitter who is connected with the southern republic’s famed wood carver.
Wednesday afternoon a lively vome of banco was cijayed by Three Strew club members at Mrs Wo Vy Apple's home. Guest Mrs Schulze of Elmira, New York attended. First prize went to Mrs T B Williams, second to Miss Madaline Constable, third to Mrs Schulze. Consolation: refreshments served to a long list of members and guests. Next meeting is Wednesday, November 28, with Mrs Irene Gerhardt as hostess.
The National Junior Shakespeare Club held its first meeting at director Mrs. Herman Gustafson’s home on Saturday morning with thirty children in attendance. An official gathering yesterday elected officers and analyzed the play Midsummer Night's Dream, listing members including Tetty Reynolds Claudine Olney Gloria Gass Betty Ray Elms Henry Ellison and many others.
Frank Weldon Jr district name warden reports the sale of eight foreign hunting licenses. Those from Gladewater Texas being Deputy U S Marshal R P Prince and Mrs Prince F L Gelispie W A Brewer and L W Powell. Young Wells of Mule Creek will be their guide and packer.
Mr and Mrs George Kerr of Valley View were business visitors in Lordsburg on Wednesday.
Roy L Cook announced a public meeting in Lordsburg to explain employer and employee obligations under the 1996 Unemployment Compensation Act. He noted 2,100 covered employers and 6,000 employees, with claim benefits starting December 1. The session aims to familiarize the public with filing procedures and law requirements.
Sunday afternoon and evening Albert K Mitchell Republican candidate for governor and fellow contenders planned a Hidalgo county stop. A terrific storm near Tucumeart prevented takeoff. Mre. McWhirter Mre. Fern Wellicott and Pred Sherman spoke at the court house while some party members toured outlying precincts. County Chairman M. M. Owens presided.
Alex Laurinas, 16, a former junior star and leading candidate for the boys first singles crown, has been elected president of the Yuma High School tennis club. He holds medals from recent victories and recently traveled to Tucson to learn from top players.
Former Lordsburg resident Mrs Mary Stevens died in Los Angeles on October 16 from a paralytic stroke. She was buried October 18 in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A longtime resident of Lordsburg and Shakespeare she once owned a Main Street ice cream parlor. She leaves daughter Anna Fagan and granddaughter Rosemary Hanter, both of Los Angeles.
The W M A of the Baptist church met at Mrs M C Moores home with all members present. They studied the book of Acts and enjoyed apple pie whipped cream and coffee. The next meeting will be at Mrs Amy Pences home.
Miss Elizabeth Parke Boyd of Lordsburg will wed James Maynard MacKinney at Second Presbyterian Church in Washington Pennsylvania on November 24.
The Lordsburg Mavericks defeated Deming 26 to 7 in a Thursday night game ending an 11 year winless streak. A strong running and passing attack, plus standout ball handling, carried Lordsburg as they built a 7-7 first quarter tie and pulled away. The win, first since interschool play began in 1977, energized the student body and set up a next game against Attheny, then a Thanksgiving clash at Duncan High School.
Dr and Mrs Vinson reside in a Sunset Gold Company built home at the Gold Gulch Place. The placer proportion is leased to Dr Vinson. The piece notes the climate and health reform ideas of a veteran educator, Will Bowers, who claimed New Mexico can restore health.
Charles Bpeer 84 a long time Union country homesteader died after four years of illness at Old People’s Home in Lordsburg where Merc Ian Parker oversaw care for him and his wife of 63 years. A Missouri native he moved to Texas as a youth and after years of work and frontier fighting he settled in the state 45 years ago. He married Frances Coker in Texas 63 years ago and died Wednesday with his funeral held the next day at the Middle Animaa schoolhouse conducted by Rev. Bryan Hall of Lordsburg Methodist Church.
Mrs. Willin Lacy reported success in raising funds to buy two heating stoves and cover installation for the Old People's Home. Jay Edington offered the stoves at a nominal price and will install them for free. Church of Christ members pledged half the needed amount along with other donors including Mrs. K. R. Progle Schwarz's Ready To Wear Fisher's Hardware A. V. Broun and several others.
HH. J. Grimes president and L. I. Travis general manager of Banner Mining Company visited this week. They held talks with Superintendent B K Bow man. Mrs. Grimes accompanied her husband to Lordsburg as she often does.
All Lorda burg and Hidalgo County leaders are invited to Hotel Hidalgo this afternoon at four o clock to hear Winton E F Allen of the Coronado Quarto Centennial Commission. He will explain the upcoming celebration and its significance. The meeting is described as very important.
The latest lawn sprinkler system will be installed at Hotel Hidalgo patio and Biltmore Inn according to landscape expert L B Robinson who will supervise. Pipe and equipment have arrived and installation will proceed promptly as the newest word in lawn sprinklers.
City Marshal Felix Jones detained Lee Williamson, wanted for burglary in Amur ie, Texas. Williamson was seized from a transcontinental bus on November 2. Extradition papers will enable Sheriff Adama to transport him to Texas.
Aside from those mentioned last week who have brought in deer are Nat Gammon, Dr. C B Austin, Robert Cureton, Dan George, T Rouse, Sidney Watson, Coach Robert Pierce and W W Ware.
Hidalgo county voters reelect Sheriff John Cavin for two more years as he continues policing. He recaptured three stolen musical instruments from Vir den School, credited to the operation led by the sheriff and the band master.
Mr and Mrs Sherwood Culberson host Mrs Russell Agee of Los Angeles and Mrs Sam Strain of Silver City as house guests. Mrs Strain is a sister of Mrs Culberson.
The Red Crown Roll Call starts today and runs until November 24. Have your donation ready when the committee calls. Mr. Luella S. Clark has been in Lordsburg Hospital for several days but is now home.
