Hidalgo County residents are urged to apply locally for 1940 Census enumerator and field positions. Washington requests no direct applications. local offices will announce openings and details on pay rate district size and duration. Both men and women eligible with civil service not required. veterans get preference if qualified.
The Missionary Society held its Week of Prayer at Mrs. Inson's home on Monday November 6. Mrs. Dick Lew led a program divided into The Amenment of Work and He Needs Hearts with talks by Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. P. M. Chase, Harlan Black, Mrs. E. F. lers, Mrs. H. R. Scofield, and others. Mrs. Jams LaSalle spoke on Man's College in Rio. The afternoon session inspired attendees and congratulated Mrs. Lewis.
H H Conder will depart in November 14 for Albuquerque to join an Optometric Program Clinic led by Dr A M Ton, National Director of Ion, scheduled for November 15 and 16. Conder will travel the night of November to attend.
A group of high school girls met in the Home Economics department on Monday and Tuesday evenings to study planning and cooking. They will hold meetings through December 12 and prepare soups, vegetables, meats, salads, breads, desserts, and luncheon and dinner menus, compiling receipts for home use.
Bryan Hall church announces Sunday School at 9 45 a m and worship at 11 a m with a sermon on Did Jesus Believe the Sin of War Could be Overcome in This World Anthem by the Choir and a Legion member invitation. Weekend guest Miss Suzanne Johnson from Las Cruces teaches in public schools. Mrs Barbara Wright from Tucson visiting Miss Sander's sister.
Early winter ceremony at Lordsburg Methodist Church unites Miss Julian Ellen Birchfield and Mr. P. M. Chase with Rev. Bryan Wall officiating. The reception at the Green home followed a lavish breakfast. guests include the Chase and Birchfield families, friends, and local dignitaries.
The Tuesday Bridge Club gathered at Mrs. E. F. Sanders home with Mrs. T. M. Glass hosting. Attendees for the 1 o'clock luncheon and bridge included Mesdames Donald, John, E. F. Sanders, Stella Egan, Harold Rolfe, Fay Clayton, J. T. McNutt and L. B. Robinson.
Mr and Mrs Frank Brickey of Duncan welcomed Colleen Adele a seven and a half pound girl Tuesday afternoon at DeMoss Hospital. Mr Brickey coaches Duncan High School and serves as Duncan Rotary Club secretary.
Robert EB Smith of San Francisco led a party returning from a New England tour when a tire blew out on his 1098 Pontiac causing the car to overturn three times. Passengers include Miss Thurman of London Eva Coulter Clara Munch Herman Lockman and Miss Sibyl Rice. They were taken to Lordaburg Hopkins Hospital where Rice was treated for a cut above the eye and Coulter for a broken right elbow. The car was damaged but no one severely hurt and the group continued by train.
Mr and Mrs Frank Stenwele hosted a Saturday evening gathering at their home with a World’s Fair theme. Orange and blue decor featuring the Trylon and Perisphere set a festive tone as guests enjoyed period decorations and songs including The Sidewalks of New York.
The advisory committee met for its regular monthly session on Monday November 6 with members present including Miss Marcus Cossidy a district child welfare worker, Mrs Felix Gauthier of Animas, Superintendent Tom Mayfield, Mrs R E Buvens, Mrs Ray Edington, Mrs Willis Lacy, Mrs Tom Pendleton of Cloverdale, Mrs N Tenny of Virden, Mrs Dunkerson of the Banner Mine and Mrs Ena Walters.
George H. Cureton, president of the Southwestern New Mexico Livestock Show and Fair Association, calls a Board of Directors meeting at the courthouse on Friday November 10 at 2 p m. The notice urges full attendance to discuss important matters.
Lions Club members met Tuesday noon with Frank Brickey, secretary of the Duncan Rotary and Duncan High School coach, proposing Lordsburg join a December first aeronautical contest between Lordsburg, Duncan and other communities. Lion Bryan all outlined a community chest plan. Lion Holt spoke of the YMCA Pacific Coast Conference in Lordsburg November 18 and 19 and plans for an aviation training school at Lordsburg airport pending War Department and National Guard approval. Two vocal solos by Lions Rosenstein and Sumner highlighted the luncheon.
Mrs Julius Schwarz was luncheon hostess to Mrs Eddie Ward wife of the Mayor of Silver City and her young daughter Edwina with Mrs Rosa Schwarz on Monday noon.
Loyal A. Marcoot aged 28 died after an eighty foot fall at the Banner Mine where he had worked about two months. He left a wife and child and is survived by his parents and a brother in California. Funeral services were held at Heather Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Hall officiating. Burial planned in Wilmington California.
The wedding of A. L. Conner and Miss Jeanne Bacot was held Saturday at 9 p.m. at St James Mission San Cruces New Mexico with Rev. Hunter Lewis officiating. They honeymooned briefly in El Paso and will reside in the Larson apartment in Silver City after December 1.
The Rainbow Girls chapter sponsors a November 16 evening show at the illuminated athletic field featuring educated donkeys. A ball game on donkeys and donkey races will entertain, with donkeys noted for film and radio appearances including Jolson and Suez credits.
Hidalgo County committee to raise funds for polio eradication includes Mrs Frank Winters as chairwoman Mrs Agnes Edington county superintendent of schools and Mrs Claude Sanders of the American Legion Auxiliary. Containers placed in local businesses invite loose change donations for the cause.
The N and T Sewing Club met at Mrs. Bryan Hall's home with members including F. H. Singer Charles Fuller George Trimble J. H. Clark Ira Conner A Green Nellie Holliday and P M McInnis. Mrs George Ewan attended as guest. Members drew names for the upcoming Christmas party. Refreshments included pumpkin pie with whipped cream and coffee and tea.
A health briefing notes 175 deaths daily due to tuberculosis nationwide, highlighting ongoing mortality from TB despite public health efforts and the need for continued vigilance and treatment access.
Renowned columnist Ernie Pyle and his wife stayed at the Hotel Hidalgo in Lordsburg from Sunday night to Monday noon. In a Liberal representative interview, Pyle touted his travels, noting vast mileage, hotel stays, and widespread newspaper syndication from Alaska to Miami and beyond.

Paul H. Elmore leads Piest Baptist Church with Sunday School at 10 a.m. worship at 11 a.m. and 7:40 p.m., BT. U. at 6:20 p.m., and Wednesday prayer and choir practice at 7 p.m. A gospel message invites all to attend.
The marriage of Pauline Baxter and George P. Jeffus was held at the Silver City Methodist parsonage on Sunday morning with Rev. H. L. McAliater officiating. Attendants included Mrs. John M. Jeffus and Roger B. Springer. witnesses listed several Jeffus and Baxter family members. The couple will reside in a new home at Main and 6th Street, to be completed early next year.
The F. P. Club gathered at Mrs. Hugh Garrett of Steins on November 8. Attendees included Mrs. J. H. Baxter Harlan Black Weldon Eason Dick Lewis Luther Lacy James LaSalle J. T. McNott and Allan Bowman. Refreshments of tuna fish salad hot rolls and coffee were served.
H i Delleney from the Chevrolet Office has assisted in transferring the Chevrolet line to Mr Walker. Delleney reports that Walker has retained leadership for Chevrolet in Lordsburg, maintaining over fifty percent of the Chevrolet business. He is now equipped to give complete service on Chevrolet and all General Motors lines.
The Junior Auxiliary met at Mrs Moselle Menweber's home on Wednesday November 8 with Mrs Alma Carton present. An Armistice Day program was held and attendees agreed to join a Thanksgiving party honoring members away at school. The Juniors also sent thanks for the Legion party November 1 and planned Christmas activities for veterans and children, closing with a supper of tacos and tamales.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library Board, chaired by Mrs Claude Puller, planned a two week closure ending December 6 to install a shelf set. Felix Jones was elected treasurer and Gracie Posner reported on the New Mexico State Convention with board thanks. Donations came from H M Fields Eugene Montague Mia St KB Ravens and Mrs H Joy. members present included Mrs Claude Fuller Mrs Meadamea Conner N C Tenney and others.
Mrs T B Williams directs the Lordsburg 4H Club Orchestra which will broadcast at 7 40 p m on KOB Albuquerque on Tuesday November 14. Mrs Olive Cruse invites all radio listeners to tune in and bring friends without sets to listen. The group has gained wide appreciation across New Mexico.
Judge B B Ownby, one of three surviving Veterans of the United Indian Wars of the U S A for this region, has been elected National Judge Advocate. Mrs Viola Ransom Donath remains National Historian and Publicity Director for the nation wide organization incorporated in California eleven years ago. Their slogan is There's only a few of us left.
The Wednesday Sewing group gathered at the home of Mrs A Chase with members including Mesdames Mearna Pierce Moses Gart Hall Gal berson and Miss Ima F. Guests were Mrs Culberson Mrs Chase Mrs Fisher and Mrs Gale. Tea and pumpkin pie with whipped cream and coffee were served.
Mrs Noble Kirkpatrie and Mrs J T McNutt spent the past weekend visiting in El Paso.
