Hidalgo voters retain two commissioners and assessor in tight races

Hidalgo County voters re elected Commissioners Joe Burgess and Maura Rico after close results. Rico led Lance Williams 928 to 885 and Burgess beat Allen Kerr 939 to 901. Several officials were unopposed including Francisco Chaires for commissioner and Olivia Ramirez for assessor, with margins listed for other local races.

Arredondo Resigns as Lordsburg City Treasurer

Sherri Arredondo resigned from the Lordsburg City Council Friday November 2 after a career starting April 28 1985 as Community Development Director and later serving as City Clerk and Treasurer Administrator She offered six weeks notice to aid hiring and training plans She may pursue accounting studies at Western New Mexico University and seek local work while thanking the city for public service.

Local Schools Observe American Education Week in Lordsburg

Lordsburg School District will mark American Education Week from November 12 to 16 1990 with open house events at R.V. Traylor Elementary Southside Central Elementary Dugan Tarango Middle and Lordsburg High. The theme Educating Everyone Takes Everyone stresses community involvement while the Animal Board of Education meets November 13 at 7 30 p.m. in the central administration building drawing for a Thanksgiving Turkey will be held in each building.

Christmas tree permits on Gila National Forest available soon

County voters by precinct note Christmas tree permits for personal use on the Gila National Forest from November 1 to Christmas Eve. Permits cost 5 dollars in Mimbres Silver City and Black Range districts and 3 dollars in Luna Reserve Glenwood and Quemada districts. Limit one tree per family.

Grand Jury Petitioned In Hidalgo County

A petition to convene a grand jury was filed with the Hidalgo County District Court Clerk. Signatures appear sufficient under New Mexico law to form a county grand jury to investigate allegations against Thomas Tomato Flores including lying under oath about heroin use, drug free status, unreported drug buys, and supplying alcohol to minors, with a request for a special prosecutor.
