Lordsburg city councilors Wednesday night voted to release Rene's Aviation Inc from its contract to operate Lordsburg Municipal Airport. Bill Hirth of Rene's Aviation cited financial reasons for exiting the contract and the council noted a reliable operator is needed and may advertise for bids.

Hidalgo County Backs Reagan in Landslide Victory

Hidalgo County joins New Mexico in delivering Ronald Reagan a decisive win over incumbent Jimmy Carter. Reagan gains about 80 000 votes and an 18 point margin while Carter earns 1 060 votes locally. Local results also shape state races and constitutional amendments across the region.

Challengers Strong Democrats take seats as Ronald Reagan’s sweeping national victory appears to have limited impact locally. In District Two Fausto Noce defeated rancher Ramos for the Democrat win, while Joe D. Croom topped Tom Jackson in District Three. Powell, Diaz, Moore, Ramirez, Moore, and Mitchell ran unopposed in other county races. Joe Skeen, a Republican, wins New Mexico congressional seat as a write-in candidate with 37 percent of about 98 percent of returns. David King on ballot had 35 percent, Dorothy Runnels 28 percent. Margin about 4301 votes. Skeen’s victory marks first time a major candidate won office via write-in in state history.

Hidalgo County Clerk Becky Diaz thanked voters for turnout on Tuesday estimating a 65 to 67 percent participation. She noted no traffic obstruction complaints and praised the courtesy of candidates, workers, and voters at the polls.

Traylor to Hall of Fame for 33 years of service

R V Traylor, former principal of Lordsburg Elementary Schools for 33 years, received the State Hall of Fame Award at the Annual State Teachers Convention in Albuquerque on October 23. The award was given by Gloria Farris, former teacher and NEA representative for L E A Southwest District. Attendees at the Recognition Banquet included Mr and Mrs Traylor, Mr and Mrs Jay Farris, Debbie Hood and Patty Lucero.
