Lordsburg school board approves adding corporal punishment to the district policy manual as a last resort discipline tool. Superintendent Phil DeFoor says principals and staff may use it. parents may object but must sign a form. Enrollment decline risks $43,001 in funds over 40 days, affecting next year’s budget.
Bethleen J. Swapp has joined Hidalgo County as Home Economist with New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service. The Virden area native returns with husband Jon Thomas and four children, after teaching home economics in Colorado and Arizona and earning degrees from Northern Arizona University and Brigham Young University.
The Animas School Board met on October 13 in a short session. Donna Townsend reports the board reviewed current enrollment figures and discussed implications for scheduling and funding.
Frank Romero aged 47 lifelong Lordsburg resident died October 28. Visitation Sunday at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapel, rosary at St. Joseph's Church, Mass Monday at 10 in the same church. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Survived by wife Irene, four sons, four daughters, four sisters and several grandchildren. Burial by Baca's Heather.
Michael J. Lewis announces re election bid for District Attorney in May 1986 appointment and November 1986 election. He cites prosecutions of violent and drug crimes and crimes against children. He notes recent hires and full services for the Sixth Judicial District covering Luna, Grant, and Hidalgo Counties.
Quinto T. Dutch De Paloi 83 died at home in Lordsburg. Rosary Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Funeral Friday at 10:00 a.m. St. Joseph’s with Fathers Arroyo and Rivera. Interment Shakespeare Cemetery. Born October 10, 1904 in Globe Arizona. Survived by wife Leila six sons three daughters two nephews several grandchildren. Boca Heather Funeral Chapel in charge.
Lupe Rivera, a 38 year City of Lordsburg employee, recalls her long service from 1949 starting as a bookkeeper. She worked for mayors Baxter, Kimbley, Koff, Hill and White among others, faced a salary cut, and joined Phelps Dodge bond signings in New York in 1975 and 1979. Rivera plans visits to her son at Mayo Clinic and celebrates two grandchildren and a grandson in college.
