The Observation Post reports Chief C L Rogers praise for Halloween behavior and a reminder to observe Veterans Day on Wednesday November 11. Mayor Heather issues a proclamation to honor veterans and request flag display, with courthouse and bank closures noted and other businesses remaining open.
Local Lions conduct a two day broom sale with additional items including door mats ironing board covers and mops. Volunteers collect used glasses to aid Chilean students and trucks will be stationed behind Amin's at Second and Pyramid for easy pickup of merchandise.
The Boys Town choir of Nebraska directs a concert of popular and religious music in Deming on November 24 under Rt. Rev. Francis P. Schmitt II. Knights of Columbus Council 4256 sponsors the event at LULAC Hall with a capacity crowd expected from Southern New Mexico and West Texas. Ticket outlets include Mahoney's store and Holy Family church rectory.
Lordsburg Lodge No. 30 with Grand Lodge of New Mexico backs American Education Week November 8-14. Girl of Today Janell Dunagan Boy of Today Charles Walters and Teacher of Today Louise Rankin named. honors to be given at the next P A meeting at 7 30 in the school cafeteria. Public Schools Week theme promotes New Mexico Public Schools The Launch of a Continuing Democracy and urges parental and citizen participation.
Animas schools observe American Education Week with an Open House on Thursday November 12. The building opens at 6 30 pm staff greet parents and friends and prime two hours for parent teacher conferences. A program in the auditorium and a PTA meeting close the evening.
Lordsburg P T A announces an International Bazaar at the Cafetorium on Saturday December 5 from 10 am to 5 pm. Gifts from thirteen foreign countries priced from 1 to 13 dollars target the whole family and early shopping is advised.
The New Mexico Army National Guard’s Btry C 2nd AW Bn 200th Artillery returned from the Carolina maneuvers as honorary members of the 82nd Airborne Division. General York credited their support for a successful exercise and presented commendations and scarfs to participants. Drills scheduled for November 21 and 22 will focus on weapons qualification and familiarization with fatigues as the uniform.
Six men were nominated for three Chamber of Commerce director terms. Ralph Burton C L Height Bill Kimbley Victor Lazar Alvin Parkes and Dick Deeckum appear on ballots mailed to members. Ballots returnable to the Chamber office for counting on November 16.
Leaders and 4-H members who completed projects will receive year completion pins and special recognitions. Miss Louise Garrett from New Mexico State University Extension Service called Hidalgo County Extension for a conference with County Home Agent Eva M. Thomas. Dr. Lee from NM State University Textile Research accompanied Miss Garrett.
Explorer Post 120 held a two day camp out at Camp Victoria in the Chiricahua Mountains. Attendees Pau Tagland Chris Kent John Mc Carty Gene Flickinger and Mike Collins showed skill at guessing heights and distances and chopped logs quickly. A new program of activities will follow every other post meeting.
Farmers will receive ballots to vote for three committeemen and two alternates for each ASC community committee Hidalgo County announced by W C Miller chairman. Eligible voters include those in national farm programs and farm owners tenants or sharecroppers legally voting age.
The Range Cafe hosted a Dinner for the Business and Professional Woman's Club on October 29. Fred Foster of the Grant County Legislature spoke on the ten amendments on the ballot. Mrs Foster attended as a special guest along with several club members and guests.
Gene Rutter, minister of the Church of Christ at Fifth and Pyr amid, resigns to take evangelistic work in Cincinnati Ohio. His last services there will be Sunday November 8 after serving since 1960. Mrs Rutter and their two children have remained in Cincinnati. he will join them soon. A pot luck supper is planned at 5 pm at the church.
Hidalgo County backed President Johnson in a landslide with 995 to 628 over Goldwater. Local races favored Democrats: Montoya, Walker, Morris won seats. Mechem and Easley led GOP bids. Bond issues mostly approved. amendment on tax referral failed. absentee ballot measure passed but void without state approval. Voter turnout reached 72 percent with 1,671 ballots of 2,270 registered.
Nine New Mexico State University county home agents with the Cooperative Extension Service will travel to Washington D C on November 18 for the National Home Demonstration Agents Association annual meet. Attendees include Grace Carrell Zuni Jewall Limacher Roswell Geraldine Saunders Estancia Stella Tate Portales Eva Thomas Lordsburg Hazel Vance Albuquerque Emma Widmark Mescal Merlie Thompson Los Alamos Owaissa Crites Clayton. Vance will serve as voting delegate and Crites as western region councilor. Thomas will receive the Distinguished Service Award. Violet Shepherd, retired from Silver City, attends as honorary member.
