Lordsburg High School Closes Year With Commencement

The Lordsburg High School year ends with a baccalaureate in the auditorium and a class night. Doctor Rex Strickland of the Texas School of Mines offered the commencement address. Valedictorian Dorothy McInnis and salutatorian Dan George named. Annual Faculty Picnic At Valedon Under Mayfield Leadership

Superintendent and Mrs Mayfield hosted a four year old tradition for Las Cruces and Lordsburg school staff and their spouses. The union dinner at Valedon featured Mrs Mayfield’s cooking a lavish fried chicken menu with salads rolls punch red frijoles and milk nickels. Secretary Holt enjoyed being a guest at the festive gathering.

Theatre party honors McInnis family and senior class

Mr and Mrs P M McInnis and daughter Dorothy hosted a theatre party for the senior class on Thursday night May 15 at the Palace Theatre. The class and sponsor Mr Brown enjoyed the show and were later served refreshments at the McInnis home.

Feeder Sale Committee Picked for 1941 Event

At a May 17 meeting in the Agent's office Bob Royall selected the 1941 Feeder Sale committee. Members include Claude Sanders George Cureton Freeman McWhorter Taylor McDonald Tom Gee Geo Godfrey Walter McGrath Tom Upshaw Sherwood Culberson A D Brownfield Huling Means G W Evans Charlie Martin and Harlan Black. Culberson re elected general manager and grounds superintendent. A finance sub committee is Charlie Martin Geo Cureton and Dick Cureton. A $30 per car charge defers advertising costs and pays the auctioneer Col Earl Gartin returns as auctioneer. The goal is 1500 head in carload lots for the October 27 sale to attract buyers and higher calf prices.

Womans Club Flower Show A Crowd Attracts Lordsburg Virden

The Womans Club Flower Show in Lordsburg drew a large crowd Monday afternoon with 78 entries from Lordsburg and Virden. Judges Mrs. Felix Jones and L. B. Robinson inspected each display as blue and red ribbons were awarded to many varieties including roses petunias snapdragons larkspur and irises with a grand prize for floral arrangement by Mrs. G Richardson Virden. The event earned high praise from the Chamber of Commerce which received the blue ribbon bouquet of roses.

Mildred Townsend Returns From Extended Tour

Mrs Mildred Townsend completed a long trip starting in February with Mrs Joseph Roberson to Tucson to visit her aunt Mrs W B Horton. She toured Los Angeles and Bakersfield seeing friends including Mrs Dorothy Lister now recovering from a hospital stay. Townsend heard a lecture by Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt and attended Easter services at Forest Lawn Glen dale. Her aunt Mrs Harry Cole in Bakersfield died last Wednesday, Townsend's father George Trimble attended the funeral with him in Lordsburg before heading to Bakersfield.

Ex Boy Scout Rescues Fisherman In Mogollon Rescue

Bert Snyder Jr., a former Boy Scout from Silver City, jumped into the swift Big Dry creek in the Mogollon mountains and pulled J. B. Sheffield to safety. Two hours of artificial respiration were needed before Sheffield revived and recovered at Lordsburg Hospital.

Quarterly Meeting of Stockmen in Lordsburg

The first meeting of the entertainment committee for the cattlemen's gathering in Lordsburg on June 21 was held at the Hidalgo Coffee Shop. Attendees included Geo H. Cureton Sherwood Culberson C Martin Freeman McWhorter George Godfrey Marlin Hoggett and Secretary Willard E Holt. President Tom Clayton of the State Cattlemen's Association expects a large turnout and a landmark event with a cattlemen’s dance, a barbecue at the fair grounds at 12:30 on meeting day, and plans to attract at least 160 prominent cattlemen from beyond three counties. The event will open 9:30 a.m. June 21 at the courthouse, following up on the favorable mood from a recent State Bankers Convention in Lordsburg.

Mrs. R. M. Reynolds hosted a dancing party at her ranch near Lordburg on Monday night in honor of the senior class.
