McDonald And Morelos Named to SBDC Advisory Board

Mayor Clark Smith appoints Councillors Freddy Morelos and Pansy McDonald to represent Lordsurg on the BAC-7 advisory board. The body, drawn from business government and education sectors of five counties, guides BAC-7 operations for Western New Mexico University as the designated SBDC serving Hidalgo Catron Grant Luna and Sierra Counties.

Elks Lodge doubles 1988 scholarships for two areas

Lordsburg Elks Lodge 1813 announces doubling of annual 1988 scholarships for Lordsburg and Animas high school seniors. Each district will award two $300 grants for the 1988 89 year. recipients include Thomas W. McDonald Bud Kuenstler Blair A Gray and Daryth Richens. Letters will be issued at graduation. Mayor Smith notes SBDC federal funding and SBA backed three year plan beginning in Grant County with expansion planned.

Kindergarten Registration Set May 25

Registration for the 1988-89 Kindergarten will be held at the Central School on Wednesday May 25 starting at 9 15 a.m. Parents must bring a birth certificate and an immunization record. Child must be five by 12 01 a.m. September 1 to be eligible. Call Central School at 542-9222 with questions.

A special Hidalgo County Commission session is set for Tuesday May 31 at 5:00 p.m. in the Courthouse Commission Chambers to discuss the fiscal year 1988-89 budget and related topics. The public is invited.

City Clean U Campaign Seeks Cemeteries Help May 26 27

The City of Lordsburg invites residents to help clean Shakespeare Cemetery on May 26 and Mountain View Cemetery on May 27 led by City Superintendent Alex DeLaGarza. Volunteers are welcome to join crews for cemetery improvements ahead of Memorial Day. The city also invites applications for summer lifeguards at City Hall, with Pool Manager and City Clerk reviewing over two weeks, aiming to open the pool Friday June 3.

County Commissioners Hear Reports At Special Meeting

The county commission reviewed Miller/Séroles road near Rodeo and Del Sol road northeast of Lordsburg. A liquor license transfer was requested, SWISH funding discussed, and a budget workshop held for 1988-89. DA Mike Lewis said a Monday hearing directed papers for general condemnation to establish the road. papers to be ready for the next meeting. Commissioner Fausto Noce pledged to satisfy both parties.

Summer Reading Program to Have New Look 1988

The Summer Reading program expands for June 1988 to include Lordsburg and Animal elementary students with preschool participation. Reporting times run 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM weekdays at the Lordsburg library. Animas and Playas report at Cotton City and Playas centers on Thursdays 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Reports may be written drawn or spoken with a six book per day limit.

Gila Cliff Dwellings opens with extended summer hours

The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument will be open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily starting May 27 to handle higher summer visitation. Evening programs at the campfire circle near the parking lot will run May 28 and 29, with Saturday night programs every summer at dusk on varying topics such as prehistoric food, tool making, early area history, archeology, wilderness ethics, and forest ecology.

Maura Rico Seeks Hidalgo County Commission District 1

Maura Rico a Lordsburg Democrat seeks Hidalgo County Commissioner District 1. Daughter of the late Mike Rico she co runs a family business since 1969 with her mother. A Lordsburg High School graduate she attended UNM and Western New Mexico University and has three children Michael Mark and Yvette Koebke. Rico has long been active in politics and community affairs and currently chairs Hidalgo County Democrats. In 1984 she served as a voting delegate to the National Democratic Convention in San Francisco.

City of Lordsburg reports both garbage trucks are out of order and will be off the road for at least four days per City Clerk Sherri Arredondo. Officials urge residents to be patient and cooperative during the disruption.
