Pilo Lopez Killed In Mine Accident

Porfirio Lopez known as Pilo, 49, died Saturday May 14 in a mine accident south of town when a seven ton rock slab crushed him between a mucking machine and the drift wall. He was born March 13, 1917 in San Miguel County New Mexico and left behind a large family including wife Marta, 12 children, five brothers and five sisters. Graveside rites were held at Shakespeare Cemetery Tuesday. pallbearers named.

Changes in Sheriff’s Police Departments

Teofilo Tony Moreno was appointed city police patrolman Monday to replace Donald Pinky Kerr whose temporary employment was terminated by Mayor Alan Koff. Moreno, a former deputy sheriff and defeated sheriff candidate, was replaced as deputy sheriff by Manuel Ramirez, son of Mike Ramirez, by Sheriff Leroy McCarty.

LULAC Officers Installed at Sunday Session

LULAC Council No 358 installed officers and initiated new members May 16 at the La Fiesta Club. New officers included Art Altuna president Felix Placencia secretary Manuel Alvarado chaplin Neto Renteria guardian Reyes Aguilera and Manuel Renteria trustees. Absent were Manuel Gandara vice president Manuel Ramirez treasurer and Gene Moore trustee. New members initiated were David Arredondo Tony Arredondo Charles Harding John Ruiz Ramon Corrales and Martin Leyba. Cold cuts and refreshments followed for 28 members.

Lordsburg High to Hold Baccalaureate and Commencement

Lordsburg High School Fully Accredited Says Lions Official

Dave Walker district governor and Bayard Lions Club member visited Lordsburg and praised the high school. He noted Lordsburg High School was the only NM school reevaluated this year with no advisements or warnings, signaling full accreditation. He highlighted Lions Club programs improving the city and state.

Mayor and City Clerk Appeal Mandamus Ruling

Mayor Alan Koff and City Clerk Lupe Rivera appeal to the State Supreme Court the District Judge Norman Hodges ruling allowing a Writ of Mandamus to stand. Forest Service Warns of Rising Fire Danger in New Mexico

U S Forest Service officials warn fire danger climbs in south and central New Mexico due to dry windy weather. In 1965 there were 605 fires on national forests in NM burning 6197 acres with 67 human caused. Across the Southwestern Region 1739 fires occurred. 980 were human caused. People may be liable for damages and firefighting costs. A safety pamphlet is available from Albuquerque and ranger offices.
