Three LHS Students To Receive LULAC Awards

The Lorde burg High School will have three students receive LULAC scholarships this year. Raymundo Saucedo president of the local council notes funds come from citizen cooperation and merchant support. Applications are welcome and selections will follow interviews. high grades are not the sole criterion.

VEW District Convention Set At La Fiesta Club

A V. F. W. district convention will be held at the La Fiesta Club Sunday May 14 at 2 p m. Posts from Santa Rita Silver Hatch Bayard and Deming will be represented. After election of officers a buffet supper and dance will follow with music by the Royal Aces. Commander Martin Leyva urges all members and their wives to attend.

Music Boosters Bake and Clothing Sale Opens Saturday

The Lordsburg Music Boosters Club host a bake and clothing sale starting 9 a.m. Saturday at the old post office building. Lehman’s Dept Store donated clothing. two items will sell for over $1. Proceeds help band and chorus programs. Parents of students in any band class or chorus are asked to donate baked goods or cash.

The Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does held an officers election on Wednesday May 3 at the Elks Lodge. Variety Show At L H S Promises Eighty Performers

A May 15 8 pm Cafetorium production at L H S features 80 performers in over 21 numbers across three scenes including street church and country. Classics like Misty Love Is A Many Splendored Thing and Blue Moon will be heard along with other songs routines and comedy acts.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Named at Animas High

Kerry Lyn and June were named valedictorian and salutatorian at Animas High School. Kerry Lyn earned editor roles and varsity letters while active in FHA and Pep Club. June served as editor of the yearbook and school paper, held multiple offices, and earned most Athletic Girl. Commencement is May 25 in the gym. Baccalaureate May 22 in the auditorium.

Narcotic Charge Guilty Plea Leads to Prison Term

Richard Galindo Lopez pleaded guilty to illegal possession of narcotics before Judge Norman Hodges. Lopez received two to 10 years with credit for time served. two related counts were dismissed. The case involved marijuana. Frank Romero Talavera faces a similar charge today. Albert Levario, free on bond, has a later court date.

First National Bank Names Promotions In Lordsburg

At a May 9 directors meeting of the First National Bank of Lordsburg Miss Gladys Sapp was promoted to vice president and Mrs Hazel Amis to cashier Sapp has 41 years with the bank and led as interim manager for periods Amis has 12 years at the bank and most recently served as assistant cashier and head teller President Ralph Burton praised both as key figures in the bank's organization.

Dignitaries To Attend LULAC Convention

LULAC Council No 358 hosts the state convention May 27 28. Senator Montoya will speak at the banquet May 27 at the Cafetorium. Attending dignitaries include State Senator Smalley and Representative Carter Kirk along with LULAC officers. Early registration for the 1967 68 term at Lordsburg elementary schools on Saturday May 13 from 8 30 to 11 30 A M. Parents of children born in 1961 urged to register with birth and health certificates showing DPT polio and smallpox vaccinations.

Mavericks Win 4 B District Meet

The Mavericks won the 4-B District Track Meet at T or C with 88 points, capturing the district championship for the first time since 1958. T or C finished second with 85.5, Hateh third with 67, Tularosa fourth with 54, and others followed. Mavericks set two school records and one meet record, produced 12 state qualifiers, and Chad Richardson led with a district discus record of 160 feet 6 inches while winning shot put and medley relay duties.

Firearms Training School for Silver City Police Held

Leonard Blaylock announced an FBI firearms training school for Silver City Police on May 16 17 18 1967. The program covers care and handling of firearms and the FBI pistol course with double and single action shooting. Chief Ryan invites surrounding agencies to attend. Instructors are FBI agents from the Albuquerque office.
