County Will Keep Sheriff Police Duties In Lordsburg

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department will continue handling city law enforcement for the coming fiscal year amid a 5-2 county action. City councilors debated renewing the contract for about $99,000, with some proposing a return to a city police department next year and others warning of higher costs and staffing challenges.

Residents Debate I-10 Sign Changes in Lordsburg

Local residents and the Downtown Business Association debated I-10 exit sign changes at a Civic Center meeting. A petition to alter signs near East and West exits to Next Exit was circulated and discussed by the New Mexico State Highway Commission.

Playas Smelter NLRB certifies anti union vote

The National Labor Relations Board certified the Playas Smelter election results where 275 employees voted against union representation by Amalgamated United Steelworkers of America. The first election at the plant, held April 22 to 24, ended 275 yes and 76 no, with no objections filed during the weeklong waiting period, allowing the earliest possible next election to be scheduled.

Lordsburg Council Votes to Pay Judge Back Wages

Lordsburg City Councilors voted 5 to 1 at a special meeting to pay Municipal Judge Jesus Estrada back wages retroactive to June 1978. Mayor Alan A. Koff was absent and dissenting vote came from Gene Noce. The move ends a year and a half dispute over the judge’s salary and follows suits filed by the Sixth District Attorney’s Office and the State Labor Commission.

Rest Area At Gary Interchange Described In NM Study

New Mexico proposes a rest area and tourist information center at the Gary Interchange on I 10 near Lordsburg. Feasibility favored the project but funding is not expected until the mid 1980s with cost estimated at 725000 dollars and state sources needed to fund construction.

City Council Okays Motel Drive Signs

Lordsburg City Councilors approved a request by the Downtown Business Association to place signs along I-10 designating Railroad Avenue as Motel Drive to boost tourism. The state highway department will decide when signs go up. Council also heard requests for Crimestoppers and Centennial Committee donations, to be addressed at budget time.

Koff Won't Attend Any Weekend Meetings in Lordsburg

Lordsburg Mayor Alan A. Koff declares he will boycott all weekend and special meetings until the city council acts as the legislative body while he serves as chief executive. He criticizes the new council for removing his staff and threatens to lead only when consulted, while councilors defend adherence to state statutes and note utilities turnover was approved by residents.

Vanita Hatch Announces Run for Hidalgo County Tax Assessor

Vanita Hatch, a Hidalgo County lifetime resident, declares candidacy for Tax Assessor in the June 3 Democratic Primary. Born in Virden, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hugh Pace, she and her husband Harvey have lived in the Animas Valley 33 years, operating Cotton City Grocery. Hatch notes prior service as Deputy Tax Assessor and ongoing coursework to aid residents in the office.
