Cooke elected president of Community Public Company

President Cooke was elected executive vice president and board member of Community Public Company at the Fort meeting held April 22. A 39 year veteran, she succeeds N Parons who retires from the utility. Bowen announced the board seat filling and Cooke’s promotion after the stock meeting. She joined the company in 1927, served in World War II, and later held roles as assistant treasurer, office manager, and executive vice president before current promotion.

Lordsburg Lions Elect Meckworth President At Annual Banquet

Meckworth was elected president of the Lordsburg Lions Club at its annual election. Officers named include Height as first vice president, Ralph Burton as second vice president, Homer Baird as third vice president, Donald McGhee as treasurer, Height as tail? and Homer Brooks as lion. Rex Daws and Brooks elected as directors to serve another year. The club set May 10 for the annual banquet at the American Legion to honor the graduating class of Lordsburg High School.

Guard Unit Plans Pre Inspection Drill Sunday

The local National Guard unit will hold a pre inspection drill on Sunday starting at 9 am and lasting until completed. Lt. Juan Moralez said the drill will take place as announced and details are provided by the unit.

Postal Savings Withdrawn After 1966 Legislation

Postmaster Felix Gauthier Jr. urges holders to withdraw postal savings certificates as the system ends. No deposits or new accounts after April 28 1966, with interest paid on full months since the ceremonial first of January 1911. Remaining funds transfer to Treasury for payment on proper claims.

Watershed Needs Studied By County Conservation Group

Hidalgo County conservation group met in Lordsburg New Mexico in April 1966 to inventory 22 watersheds and assess needs for watershed projects. Four areas including the Side Drainages into the Gila River Virden Valley Lordsburg Draw and Rodeo area show potential qualification for protection against erosion and flooding and for water use. Attendees included Ed Hitson Lewis Putnam Tom Pendleton Archie Payne Roy Stovall Louise Lytle and Rodney Newton.

Woman sheriff elected in Hidalgo County first for New Mexico

Doris McCarty won the Hidalgo County sheriff race by 18 votes over Tony Moreno and William Spurgeon, becoming the first woman sheriff in New Mexico. The Hidalgo-Luna-Sierra state senate race narrowed to two votes overall, with Ike Smalley defeating Buddy Wamel 1,924 to 1,926.
