The City of Lordsburg, a ship named for our prosperous city for social welfare work in WWI, sails between the Atlantic seaboard and other seas. It launched in Mobile Alabama on May 15 1920 with Miss Mary Dee Muir as sponsor and a ceremonial christening group.
Voters in Hidalgo County spoke on Wednesday evening about a county school board race. Agnes Edington Osfield, a Democrat, stood as a candidate in the contested position.
Ruth Ann Frymire and Samuel D. Strain wed in a spring ceremony by Rev. C Walker. The groom, a government metallurgist, and the bride, a graduate nurse, celebrated with a buffet luncheon for family friends and officials.
A man registered under the name Robert Witherell at the Hidalgo Hotel. The registrant, a native of Illinois, now a commercial man in the southwest, is accompanied by his wife on business trips. Witherell’s wife is to join him soon in Boston.
Mrs. W. H. Small writes from Long Beach to the chamber of commerce secretary noting Bowen Markley, formerly of Lordsburg and at his passing living in La Grange Indiana, was her brother in law and a nephew of the Smalls. She adds they are enjoying California fogs and both are well.
Lions club meeting heard a report on Lordsburg winings at the fourth district track meet in Las Cruces last week. A committee including Lion McInnis Augustine Ball and Palm was formed to raise funds to send athletes to the state meet in Albuquerque. Holt referenced the recent visit of former citizen J. P. Porteus who noted the City of Lordsburg in Italian and Spanish ports during his Europe tour.
Mrs Freeman McWhorter of Gold Hill was in town on Thursday for a short visit.
Fred P. Brown representing RKO announced upcoming features at the Palace Theatre. The March of Time monthly World events reels headline events November 10-11 to honor Armistice Day. Shirley Temple appears in The Littlest Rebel next Tuesday to Thursday, with additional news reels arranged for Mrs. Eddie Allen.
Rural youths participate in the National Youth Administration program across New Mexico, performing tasks from erosion control contouring to gopher destruction, plant surveys, school grounds beautification, and 4-H club support. Over 300 youths have worked since January, gaining experience and often securing better jobs, while relief families benefit from service and opportunity.
While at El Centro Secretary Holt photographed a group of girls in costume participating in a floral parade. Back home he was asked by one girl to mail her picture to 725 Holt avenue, noting the unusual request in the correspondence.
The Argonaut daylight train arrives from the east at 12 37 PM then from the west at 4 15 PM both ten minutes later than usual. The Sunset Limited night train arrives from the west at 5 00 AM and from the east at 10 33 PM. Thanks ESSPEE for doubling passenger service.
Tom McCabe of the rehabilitation service attends a conference in Amarillo with representatives from New Mexico and Texas as the dust problem is on the agenda.
Judge Geo W Hay and District Attorney Hodges presided over the regular court session on Wednesday. No opposition is seen at the polls this fall as both officers maintain orderly dockets and smooth operations.
Deming Superintendent and Mrs E C Martin traveled to confer with Superintendent Palm and joined his luncheon guests for a formal visit.
Corporal Laurier LaMontagne from Dryden is the new weather officer at Lordsburg airport. He, his wife, and young daughter are currently quartered at the Green and White Camp.
The Borah Ayers bill suspends annual government assessment work on unpatented mining claims for the year ending July 1, 1936. Senate approval followed by House passage sends the measure to the President. It disqualifies those who paid federal income tax for 1935 and limits suspensions to six lode or placer claims per person and twelve per corporation.
New Mexico reports show rising interest in 4-H clubs across livestock feeding dairy calf poultry garden field crops food and clothing clubs. County leaders and new extension agents organize councils plan county exhibits and coordinate with fairs including the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Emma Hawk joins as state club specialist aiding agents and clubs in 1936.
Mrs George W Hay is visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Charles Jenkins in ONeill Nebraska and expects to be away for several weeks.
Supt Palm and Prof Crider visited Tombstone on Sunday and viewed the Bird Cage theatre Boot Hill cemetery the worlds largest rose bush Crystal Palace saloon the OK Corral and Tombstone Epitaph office among other historic points It was a most enjoyable day.
A Chrysler Airflow sedan burned on Duncan road Tuesday night. Tom Pendleton helped occupants reach Lordsburg and Olney Motor Company recovered the wreck. Car owners Mr. and Mrs. B. Platt took the afternoon bus to El Paso. Luggage was saved.
The music pupils under Professor Rosario Lopez performed to a packed audience in the high school auditorium on Wednesday evening showcasing their evolving talents and musical discipline.
The Palace Theatre offers three prizes for top ticket sellers to Shirley Temple shows Tuesday through Thursday. Prizes include a large Shirley Temple doll, a smaller doll, and ten day passes. Tickets available from Mrs. Eddie Allen. The Littlest Rebel is the featured play.
Eight members of the local Rainbow assembly were guests of the Deming group Tuesday evening. The Deming girls served a buffet supper at 6 30 and then performed their work in a beautiful manner. Lordsburg attendees included Miss Mildred Hill Florence Gwartney Sibyl Williams Evangeline Anderson Elaine Burruss Maybelle Scott Marjorie Potter with Luella Clark Hattie Martin and Margaret Clark accompanying.
Mrs. G. L. Ross will enter the Friday bridge club this week, taking part in the weekly event.
Lordsburg athletes win multiple first places at the 4th district field meet in Las Cruces. Pierre takes the mile, Kerr wins pole vault, Allurs claims broad jump, and Det ss ties for fast high jump and places in shot put. Pendleton second in discus, DeMoss second in high hurdles and third in discus, Brown third in low hurdles and tied for third in re vault, Salinas second in mile. Our team brings home a carload of trophies.
Mr and Mrs E O Wogstad announce the birth of a son born April 30 in Lordsburg hospital. The baby weighs seven pounds with the name Glenn Merwin Wogstad.
Mrs. R. BE. Buvens entertained the Wednesday bridge club this week with guests including Mesdames Harold Luckie Maude and An n Earle Kerr, who achieved the high score.
Mrs. EF Lewis hosted the Tuesday sewing club last week with guest Mrs. Walter Boawell joining the afternoon event.
Mrs. Paul Brown hosted the Wednesday sewing club with guests Mrs. George Ewan and Mrs. John Cavin. New members Mrs. Minnie Cochrane and another member recently joined the group.
The Lordsburg Volunteer Fire Department thanks local business men for contributing 0.9 percent to the annual dance. Only one business in town reportedly declined to donate.
A candidate dance takes place at the Cloverdale pavilion on Saturday evening May 2. Music will be provided by Hiram Brakefield and his orchestra. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited to attend.
The 1934 census shows New Mexico chicken population exceeding one million with Roosevelt county first at 117000 and Curry second at 107000. The report notes poultry growth driven by grain feeding of skim milk and eggs as income for plains farmers and outlines plans to expand flocks by 1937.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rolfe visited Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Fitch in Silver City on Sunday. The group enjoyed a picnic at Cherry Creek north of Pinos Altos.
Thomas E K Hall, a druggist, is building a new adobe home on East 4th Street opposite the Woman's Club block. The 30 by 42 foot site will feature a fine northeast porch, five rooms and a bath, with pebble dashed plaster. Contractor Richard Tatech is pushing the work. Hall has planted trees and a hedge before construction begins.

Mrs Olive B Cruse traveled to Hidalgo County as a visitor this week meeting local residents and taking in regional sights. Her itinerary included informal meetings with community members and cultural exchanges highlighting local traditions.
The retiring council led by Mayor EF C DeMoss hands over to Mayor Brown and trustees Jack Heather A L Green Walter Sullivan and ED Wright in the new city hall Monday. They note retiring debt includes 2000 in water bonds and 1500 in sewer bonds with sinking funds of 6000 and 2200 respectively. The council also directed about 2500 toward the new city hall.
The Lordsburg Youth Community Council met at Lordsburg High School on April 28 to map a program aiding Hidalgo County youth. News confirms Markley died Monday at a hospital in his hometown La Orange Indiana. He and wife managed Wagle Drug Store in Lordeburg from 1917 to 1920. Mrs Markley is niece of Mr W H Smale.
A new suction seed harvester built like a powerful vacuum sweeper aids Great Plains farmers in regrassing idle native buffalo grass sod. Kansas researchers report average seed collection around 64 percent in 35 tests with a 16 foot nozzle. Buffalo grass seeds are hard to harvest and vary by plant sex. the device improves efficiency, with best results in late summer or fall.
Palador Pavilion announces a Spanish-American dance on May 2 with Pete Valverde and his orchestra from Deming. An All-American dance follows on May 9 with music by the Four Wonders. Election returns will be posted at the dances.
Lordsburg boys travel to Albuquerque for the State Track meet with Paul Pierre in the mile, Art Altune in broad jump and shot, George Pendleton in discus, Den Kerr in pole vault, Kidrig e Brown in low hurdles and pole vault. Coaches Pierce and five athletes depart Thursday. local businesses donate to fund the trip.
W. J. Hatfield erects an attractive duplex office building south of the Roy hotel with dressed brick facing and a central adobe wall. He also remodels the hotel frontage and surroundings to improve the street’s appearance.
Houghton and Neidmangner of the New Mexico Ports of Entry say Road Forks station will shift nearer the city limits and the nine mile hill station will move to the Silver City junction two miles out. The change promises great convenience to all parties.
Miss Kay Peterson district supervisor of relief and security reported Ena Walter sent in the first complete old age assistance records for the district and probably the state.
Music week opens with a joint Maverick and Mustang Band concert at Central Gym on Monday May 4 at 6 00. Howard Monger conducts Mustang Band W C Mearns directs Maverick Band. Mrs Kerson and Dr Tudor sing Victor Herbert pieces with both bands. Free admission.
