Bowman Receives New Mexico Future Homemakers Scholarship

Bowman, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Bowman of Lordsburg, won a New Mexico Future Homemakers of America scholarship at the state convention in Clovis last weekend. An outstanding home economics student, she plans to major in family economics, and has been active at Lordsburg High School as president of the junior class, secretary of the council, business editor of the annual, district president of the F H A, homecoming queen and state delegate. She attended the national F H A meeting in Salt Lake City and served as state treasurer.

Ten New Mexico students to share $5000 Kennecott scholarship

Ten New Mexico college students will share a $5000 scholarship for the next school year under Kennecott Copper Corporation’s Chino Mines Division. Awards total ten and are split among Western New Mexico University Alver City UNM NMSU ENMU NM Highlands. Applications due April 15 and winners announced May 15.

Prowler Scares off in Ongoing Residential Break-ins

Two break-in attempts in a north-of-railroad residential area occurred around 2 00 a m. Mrs Lola Herrera at 201 B Street was targeted as she slept and choked by a man who entered through a broken east window. A second entry attempt at Vicente Hernandez on East D Street involved window and door damage before the intruder fled. Police seek a man matching the described sightings.

Miss Badgett Chosen for National FHA Convention

Miss Pat Badgett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Badgett, was selected by the New Mexico F H A state advisory board to attend the four day National FHA convention in Kansas City Missouri this July. She was elected state vice president of recreation at the Clovis convention.

Eastern Star Officers Visit Highlight Masonic Ceremony

A special meeting of the Order of the Eastern Star occurred Tuesday March 26 with an official visit by Worthy Grand Matron Mrs Bessie Gibson of Farmington New Mexico and Worthy Grand Patron Melvin Howe of Ft Summer New Mexico. The event featured a Range Cafe banquet and ritual work by local officers with speeches by the visiting dignitaries. Attending members included Grand Esther Mrs Marguerite Howe and past grand matrons and numerous members from Tyrone Hurley Hatch Silver City Georgetown Santa Rita Portales Clovis and Farmington.

New Mexico closes beaver and muskrat season March 31

Closing date for beaver and muskrat trapping in New Mexico is March 31. April 1 opens the 1963-64 license year and new fishing regulations are available with license purchase. Open waters April 1 include Bitter Lake Refuge Clayton Lake Santa Cruz Jackson and Mc Allister lakes except waterfowl area.

Plane Missing Two Weeks Found Near Lordsburg

The wreckage of a two engine Piper Apache was found four miles north and east of Lordsburg Golf Course by George Jackson on his ranch. Warren Eugene Spratt, 41, of Phoenix, the pilot, was killed instantly. Evidence suggests a 40 degree impact angle and RPM at scene. The crash occurred after he departed Las Cruces March 7 en route to Phoenix.

Animal Disease Stray Station Opens At Separ

The Department of Agriculture Animal Disease Eradication Division opened a station at Separ Monday morning. All eastbound livestock trucks and trailers will be stopped for spraying as part of the fly control program. The service is free for ranchers and supports the screwworm eradication effort.

Area preps fenced range for young exotic animals

Four hundred acres on the Gila River near Red Rock will be fenced to enclose young oryx and kudu. A house at Red Rock owned by the Department of Game and Fish will be repaired for a permanent employee to protect the animals. Area selection mirrors southwest Africa habitat with desert vegetation.
