LHS Mock Trial Team Advances to State Finals in Albuquerque

The LHS Mock Trial Team won again at regional competition, advancing to the state finals in Albuquerque on April 7 and 8. In the regional first round, the LHS team performed strongly, continuing a two year streak of regional wins.

Sheriff Department Launches 800 Reporting Number

The countywide Sheriff’s office announces 1-800-727-0736 to report suspicious activity, with anonymous options, as part of an enhanced Neighborhood Watch. Sheriff Billy Darnell and Commissioner Joe Burgess support public participation in law enforcement. Also notes Lordsburg high school team advances in regional finals with players and coaches listed. state competition begins April 7.

Possible 350000 For Playas Road Project

The New Mexico Legislature approved 350000 for Playas Road with the county adding 305000 from arterial funds and state co operations, bringing total near 600000 to finish the base road. County Manager Tom Anderson cites about 175000 for fencing and notes a bid call could come and work start as early as July if approved by the Governor within 20 days.

Services Held Here For Glenn Dorsett

Glenn Harris Dorsett 77 longtime Lordsburg resident died Saturday at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. Visitation was held Tuesday 2 to 5 pm at Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel and the funeral was Wednesday March 22 at 10 am at Bacas Heather Chapel. Rev. Herb Orrell officiated. Interment followed at Mt View Cemetery with Knights of Pythias concluding the service. Pallbearers were Harvey Lang Leon Speer Joe Rutland W L Sanders Phil Pressler and Fred Ewing. Honorary bearers were Les Harvell Claud Speer Harold Bishop Ted White Bill Russell and Frank Dyke. He was born August 14 1911 in Ft Worth Texas and was a boot and shoe repairman. He lived in Lordsburg 45 years after previously residing in Carrizozo. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Knights of Pythias. He served as Manager of the Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. Survivors include his wife Oma of the home 3 daughters Glynnce Roark Burleson Texas Patricia Wellman Ozark Alabama and Gwen Campbell Reno Oregon 2 sisters Elsie Grant and Edith Cahill both of Ft Worth Texas 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Carolyn O Dell 10 years ago. Bacas Heather Funeral Chapels in charge of arrangements.

Democrats To Meet And Elect Officers

The Hidalgo County Democratic Party will hold a combined Precinct and Central Committee meeting on Tuesday April 11 1989 at 7 00 p m in the County Commission room to elect a County officer. Henson Resigns As Animas High School Coach

Rumors report Billy Henson resigns from Animas High School to take a similar role at Round Valley Arizona. He leaves Animas after winning five consecutive AA state titles and a 50 game football win streak, the nation’s longest. Animas implied schedule shows a 1989 game against Round Valley pending confirmation.

Animas Game Refuge Proposal Explored

Liberal editor John Schimmel toured the Grey Ranch with county officials and U S Fish and Wildlife personnel. The U S Fish and Wildlife service proposes to acquire the ranch and adjoining land to establish the Animas National Wildlife Refuge. Story and pictures on page 9.

Martinez Sentenced To 41 Years By Judge Saucedo

District Judge Manuel Saucedo in Lordsburg New Mexico sentenced Alfred L Martinez of Silver City to 41 years after his February 15 1989 conviction for Criminal Sexual Penetration of a Minor Under Thirteen Kidnapping and Intimidation of a Witness The crimes occurred in Silver City on September 4 1988 and the case was tried in Lordsburg on a venue change The sentence runs consecutively and includes terms for first degree felonies and a fourth degree felony The Hidalgo County Republican Party schedules a meeting April 5 at 4 00 pm in the Courthouse commissioner room with an officer election at that time

Railroad Days To Be Staged May 27 and 28

The first annual Railroad Days festival comes to Lordsburg over Memorial Day weekend May 27 and 28. Marsha Hill, Chamber Manager, says displays include model trains, memorabilia, an old time photo emporium, games, competitions, food and souvenirs at Short Park and the Special Events Center.
