At the city council meeting last Monday, Dp J H Baxter urged diverting Recreation funds to construct a lighted base park on city owned land near the pumping plant for Little Pony league use. A motion authorized start of action and explained the Recreation Fund holds about $10 000 to $25,000. Former mayor Raster noted delays in supplying water to Shakespeare cemetery.
Lordsburg High School plans to participate in the Southwestern District Music Festival in Las Vegas. The senior band competes against 14 bands Saturday at Court Junior High School with judges from the University of New Mexico. Readouts include solo and ensemble entries from Willa French Jackie Ga Pauline Sanchez Nancy Jeneane Badgett Jim Cul Connie Young Alice Willa Lunt and others.
Lordsburg Elks Lodge will sponsor Monarch Protection's two hour circus at the football stadium with two performances on April 10 at 3 PM and 1 PM. Acts include animal and high wire acts plus Dyna the performing elephant. Advance children's tickets are on sale through the coin drive to allow elementary students to attend.
D Wright suffered a heart attack early Wednesday and is reported resting in Hidalgo County Hospital. Jerdane visiting in Espanola plans to fly to Lordsburg for further care or family liaison.
The Highway Department addresses public concern over the Lordsburg urban road project on Pee Road Avenue. The letter explains start date January 29, 1958, with an approximate total construction time of 81 days, and notes public interest and possible misunderstanding about the project scope and timeline.
The Animal and Rodeo Parent Teachers Association funds a Health Mobile Dental unit through March 13 now in its second year. Seventy eight families from Animas Ro deo and Virden registered for the Cotton Day drawing at the Elks Club with seventeen prizes awarded to seventeen families. Local blood needs were also noted with type B donations urged for a seriously ill patient in Silver City.
Coronado Post No. 29 of The American Legion at Animas will hold a Pug Scott dance on March 22 at the Animas hall. Proceeds go to Ed Grant and Del Peterson of Animas, Columbus Electric Coop employees who suffered electrical burns Feb 25 and are receiving treatment at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso after first aid in Lordsburg.
Ed W. Mead, candidate for lieutenant governor, renewed acquaintances in Lordsburg on Wednesday and stopped by the Liberal office. Mead serves as vice president of Mead's Fine Bread, Inc.
Lordsburg-Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce hosted a Cotton Day at the Elks Club with city officials and A&M College specialists. Speakers explained weed control via chemicals, cotton insect management, quality preservation, and soil conservation as farmers urged cooperative growth and vegetable expansion in the valley.
Amin's Department Store plans a grand opening on Thursday March 27 at 9 a.m. in the former Union Building. George Amin will manage with sales staff Mrs Alma Carson and Mrs Clara Aguilira, offering ladies men and children's wear, home goods, and curtains in a redecorated space.
