Lordsburg Mavericks Take Third in State B Tourney

The Lordsburg Mavericks basketball team under coaches Jim Rusk and Ralph ig earned third place at the State B Basketball Tournament in Albuquerque last week. The team and their coaches were praised as a credit to the school and community.

Lordsburg Band and Chorus to Attend S W Music Festival

Lordsburg High School band and chorus will travel to Alamogordo for the Southwestern Music Festival with 21 bands and 16 choirs competing for first division awards. Judges include Oscar Butt and James Wilcox of the University of New Mexico, among others, with 60 performers sponsored by local patrons.

Council Meeting Ends With Tempers Flying

A special city council session last Friday ended in a heated exchange between Mayor Alan Koff and aldermen, with one alderman exiting. Discussion focused on buying the Southern Pacific water system for 750 and moving its storage tank at city expense. Estimates to relocate the tank ranged from 4900 to 8500 plus tax. Mayor proposed a 500 new meters and 50 000 bond issue for pipe work. Alderman Saucedo urged restraint on high priced labor and challenged ditch speed figures. The meeting adjourned amid further clashes as Cochran left the room.

The Hidalgo County Teachers Association met on March 17 as Rev. Tom Myers urged teachers to model moral character and responsible youth guidance. The 45th annual New Mexico Cattle Growers Association convention will be in Albuquerque March 22 23 and 24 with Hugh M Milton II Army assistant secretary as a principal speaker. Rodriguez Receives Concurrent Prison Terms in Burglaries

Ramon Rodriquez was sentenced to three years for burglarizing Floren Gilson’s residence and five to ten years for marijuana possession, to run concurrently from H. Vearle Payne. Eddie Mendoza, 19, was arrested for a burglary at Clem's Tire Shop, confessed, and jailed on $200 bond. he claimed to have buried loot along Second Street but returned with a car to recover it.

Morgan Named To New House Road Study Committee

The nine member House Highway Study Committee met in Santa Fe and elected Rep. Morris Dickinson chair. It was created by House Resolution No. 6 after the Highway Department Investigation bill failed. Members include Dickinson Finis Heidell George Amaya James T. Martin Travis Brem Jack Morgan Reginald Garcia James Rutherford and Fred Foster. They opted to fund expenses from personal pockets and use the legislative council. The panel will examine finances organization and policies of the State Highway Department with a May 1 meeting planned and invites highway problem comments.
