Landsail Races Pack Weekend at Lordsburg Dry Lake

The Lordsburg Optimist Club hosts Landsail Races and related events at the dry lake bed eight miles west of Lordsburg. Activities start Friday 7:00 PM with rules advisement at El Charro. Races, rodeos, trophies, and cash prizes spread across Saturday and Sunday while food booths and souvenirs enhance the community event.

Hidalgo County OKs moratorium on new landfills

Hidalgo County Commissioners approve a county wide moratorium on starting any new landfills in the near term and direct District Attorney Mike Lewis to explore an ordinance barring non Hidalgo waste. A bidding process is authorized for a land use plan and zoning ordinance to defend residents against future intrusions. A task force led by Joe Schatz is named to research and coordinate public meetings.

City Council Grants 5 Percent Merit Raises to Five Officials

City Council approved a 5 percent merit raise for five officials Alex DeLaGarza Robert DeLa Garza Joe DeLaGarza Ray Gomez and Joaquin Marquez. The meeting covered bids for a 1977 Honda motorcycle eight city workers testing for water and wastewater exams and a break in at the Sewage Plant under investigation. Mayor Clark Smith praised Irene Galvan for her work with the Southwest Council of Governments. A special session approved payroll and hired Oscar Villado as a police officer starting at 1200 monthly on April 20. An airport equipment resolution was tabled for more information. The Council discussed personnel in executive session and reported no action afterward. The City Council consists of four counties and multiple cities.

The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will hold their monthly business meeting at the American Restaurant on Friday March 17 starting at 12 00 noon.

Lordsburg School Board Schedules Auction and Budget Update

Lordsburg School Board to auction old equipment at the football field this Saturday morning. They reviewed mini dump truck bids with Smith Ford the low bidder at 16672.23 and Miller Chevrolet also considered. Superintendent DeFoor spoke on muddled 1989-90 funding and completed administrator evaluations. The Casas Grandes system thanked Lordsburg for donated outdated furniture. Principal Lee noted a study found GPA and four-class passing requirements improved student performance. The board accepted the resignation of special education teacher Jack C. Stein.

Desiree Flores Services Held Here Monday

Infant Desiree Patricia Flores, born March 7 1989, died March 7 at Tucson Medical Center. Mass at St. Josephs Catholic Church officiated by Father Paulos Kao with burial at Shakespeare Cemetery. Survivors include parents Paul and Patricia Flores a brother Derek Paul and grandparents Eloisa Flores Carlos and Delfina Saucedo. Heather Funeral Chapel in charge. The Lordsburg Zoning Commission will meet March 22 at 6 00 p m in the Hidalgo County Courthouse Commissioners Room.

Eight Lordsburg Workers Attend Las Cruces Wastewater School

The City of Lordsburg sends eight workers to a Waste and Wastewater training program in Las Cruces this week to gain certification in water and wastewater levels. On March 9 Irene Galvan attended an Economic Development and Tourism meeting in Silver City, a regional forum for citizens and business leaders to discuss issues in New Mexico's Five Year Economic Development Plan.
