Virden High School clinched the state basketball championship by defeating Melrose 26 to 14 on Saturday night. Principal Renwood and the Virden squad are celebrated as heroes with a victorious parade planned in Lordsburg and surrounding towns.
Community Public Service warns of severe injuries from flying kites near power lines. Don Johnson urges parents to prevent hazards by using dry cotton string, avoiding metal gear, and not climbing poles. If a kite becomes stuck, call the office for safe removal.
Winters nephew receives Wings at Lake Field in Phoenix, among 36 of 83 to pass special tests for a high rating. Mrs. Frank Winters Fever heads to the capital for graduation exercises. Winters Brothers had visited here some time ago.
Dorothy Collier of Mexia succeeds Mrs. Bess John Hough as Western Union manager. The former manager is transferred to El Paso and will join the Armed Forces at Fort Bliss.
Nena Clayton honored her husband Tom Clayton at a formal birthday dinner last Saturday at the Clayton home. The table was set with apple blossoms and tapers. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. D. F. McCabe, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Sanders, Mrs. De Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Har Day, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Iberson, Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Ayton, Mrs. Phylis Sorensen, St. George Lambert.
The County AAA office lists February dairy feed payments at 50¢ per hundredweight for fluid milk and 6¢ per pound for butterfat, same as January. Statewide rates rise to 60¢ and 8¢ in March and April, with plans for a seasonal reduction May through August. Producers urged to increase per cow production as pastures improve.
Mrs Ida Duniton probation officer for the Sixth Judicial District spent the week on her regular rounds. She inspected and aided juvenile attendance and delinquency cases, handling minor matters herself to lessen the juvenile court’s workload and improve child welfare.
J F Miller and Orvil Reynolds from the state office at Las Cruces led a Tuesday School of Instruction in Lordsburg on signing up for the AAA Office. Attendees from out of town included Archie Jones Marion Morten sen J E Payne Orson Richins Virden C H Dunagan Joe D Croom Jeff Dunagan and George Dunagan from Animas. Office staff included J B Culberson Mrs Floy Hudson and Mrs Fannie Poin dexter with Paul F E Hudson Extension Agent also present.
George W. Christopher James L. Harper Thomas J. Tobin and William H. Black from the District OPA in Albuquerque led a round table on rationing in Lordsburg. Local attendees included S. M. Chase W. H. Walter C. E. Speer and others with full attendance.
Monday night Mr and Mrs L B Robinson entertained a formal dinner for guests including Mr and Mrs W F Ritter Mrs Elizabeth Coon M P Walker Mr and Mrs Don Rolfe Mr and Mrs George P Jeffus and Mr and Mrs Elbert Jones in an elaborate display of hospitality.
Dun and Bradstreet reports 25 business failures in the week ending February 18 in New Mexico, up from 22 the prior week and 96 in the same week last year. OPA officials have been informed.
Merchants report February 27 token rollout at groceries speeds shopping once customers adjust. Store owners note confusion over stamps and that each red and green stamp equals ten points regardless of printed number. They expect easier use when green and brown stamps are gone.
Certificates for meritorious services were mailed to all state War Price and Rationing Board members. A total of 325 certificates were issued and signed by President Roosevelt and OPA officials including Chester Bowles Clem Collins and John D. Bingaman. Collins has resigned and been replaced by R. Y. Batterton as regional director at Denver.
A notice lists church activities with two denominations. The Church of Christ at Fifth and Pyramid led by Percy E. Krewson shows Bible School at 10 a.m and morning service at 11 with sermons. The Methodist Church on Franklin Road lists Sunday School 10 a.m and evening Epworth League and prayer meetings.
Rev George Wood and B H Keyes will alternate Sunday services at 7:30 p.m. in the Woman's Club building Laas Cruces New Mexico. All are welcome to attend.

The OPA announced a new shoe stamp for one pair of shoes beginning May 1. The current stamp No. 1 remains valid for now, while stamp No. 18 in Book One expires April 30. The new coupon will be designated before May 1.

The Robert Swan Post No. 30 American Legion sponsors a flag display drive in Lordsburg from March to March. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Boyd will install flags and poles, with a car displaying four flags on the streets. Residents are urged to display flags and may order directly from the Boyds.
Pyramid Lodge No. 23 held Tuesday meetings to accommodate seven young men advancing to second rank and two made Page. Additional applications keep coming in as activity remains high.

Mrs Grace Giles opened her house for a Deming ladies delegation before the B and P W Club district meeting on Thursday night. The visitors were longtime friends of Mrs Giles from Deming.
Mrs. Sarah Gass Brown gave birth to a son named Michael Edwin Brown at Lordsburg Hospital on March 14. The father, Edwin Brown, was called to the Navy in Virginia a day before the birth. Michael weighs 6 pounds 5 ounces and has a sister Sandra who is about a year and a half older. Margaret A. Steen, Field Price Representative, assisted Dorothy Hill with emergency grocery checks in Lordsburg Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs George P Jeffus entertained guests at a Hidalgo Grill luncheon on Wednesday. Out of town attendees included Mr and Mrs W F Ritter Mr and Mrs J B Ritter Mrs Elizabeth Coon Mr and Mrs Nat Gammon Mr and Mrs L B Robinson Roy Chambers and Willard F Holt. All guests returned home Wednesday.
Captain Zach W. Tinker named Chief of the Salvage Branch at the Eighth Service Command in Dallas Texas. His scope covers all Army posts in New Mexico Texas Oklahoma Louisiana and Arkansas with a mission to save millions for the government by reclaiming salvaged goods and scrap. He is nephew of the late Major General Clarence L. Tinker reported missing off Midway June 7 1942 and declared dead in 1943.
In Lordsburg last week a large Ritters gathering formed a family reunion with W. F. Ritter of El Paso and John B. Ritter of Las Cruces among many relatives. Elizabeth Coon and M. P. Walker of Tucson joined the group. Dan Rolfe and Nat Gammon hosted dinners with L. B. Robinson and George Jones in attendance. The mood was jolly and congenial.
A reader asks if a central Bureau in cooperation with law enforcement, chambers of commerce, and business leaders could classify bad checks and publish weekly bulletins. No collections would be attempted. the aim is to curb current and future checks.
The American Red Cross seeks 200 million dollars for the next twelve months as the need grows. Readers are urged to buy war bonds and stamps today to support the effort and aid the war relief.
Lordsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club marks its WWth anniversary with a meeting at the Women’s Club building. President Bertha Koff opened the program chaired by Mrs. Odie Lee Hartam, featuring local and state officers, musical numbers, an address by Elisabeth Murphey of Las Cruces, and reports on federation goals.
Supt. T. J. Mayfield gains strong publicity as head of the public school system and as president of the New Mexico Educational Association. He recently spent a week in Kansas City meeting top members of the American Association of School Administrators. Lordsburg involved in the visit.
Fredrick Wendell Jones son of Mrs Elnora P Jones Route 1 Box 11 Duncan Arizona earned his silver wings by graduating as a Second Lieutenant from the Pecos Texas AAF Advanced Two Engine Pilot School announced by Col Orin J Bushey. He a former Portland Oregon resident completed training in twin engine aircraft and was assigned to Pecos from Thunderbird Field Arkansas. He attended Virden High School Virden New Mexico and Pecon Army Air Field AA Training Command in the world largest advanced flying school.
At Sunday services the Church of Christ voted to invite Charles Foglianno of the South Side Church of Christ Santa Ana California to succeed Percy Krewnon and Mrs Krewnon admired by the congregation. He will lead the Fetterly Avenue Church of Christ in Los Angeles. The church is described as growing and prosperous under Krewnon and the loyal congregation. Foglianno is highly recommended.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold an Easter sale on April 8 at the Community Public Service office. Food, aprons and fancy work will be on sale. Mrs Roy Kerr, chairman, will be assisted by several ladies.
The Delta Kappa Gamma society held its regular monthly meeting at Mrs. P. M. M. Inast’s home Friday evening. Supt. Tom J. Mayfield was the guest speaker. War bonds and stamps were discussed.
The OPA policy on exchanging used fats for meat points aims to boost fat supply for the economy. Salvaged fats support medicine, ammunition, textiles, and other war needs while easing shortages from Far East oils. Citizens are urged to deliver used kitchen fat to meat dealers to aid troops.
