Manager Karl I. Mohler told the Liberal that effective March 16, 1923 and until further advised, daily wage employees of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company will receive a 10 percent increase in wage rates. The “old 85” is noted as a major property in the state.
Washington reports that L. J. Spence of Southern Pacific urged keeping the Southern Pacific System intact in a proposed consolidation. He indicated the company does not seek neighbors’ property but favors a limited number of consolidated systems under the Interstate Commerce Commission plan.
The Lordsburg Mercantile Co and J. W. Bell predict 1923 will be the fourth greatest year in baseball history. Bell, manager of the hardware department, says baseball has had its greatest successes in the past three years and views college and professional sports as natural extensions of nationwide physical culture and athletics.
Postmaster and Mrs Augustine travel to Albuquerque Sunday evening to join a meeting of the New Mexico Postmasters. They are joined at Deming by Postmaster and Mrs Vly of Deming.
Mrs. Wilkinson reports 250 guests at the Wilkinson and Carter opening last Saturday. Crowds filled the day from morning to evening as tickets were given with hats and purchases. Miss Bessie Everett, a popular post office clerk, won the 4:30 prize drawing. A luncheon was served, with Mrs. Wilkinson aided by Mrs. Hancock, Mrs. Brooks, and Donna Turpin at the punch bowl.
Rumors of a humorous fundraiser play circulate as the Dramatic Club schedules a mock wedding with Lordsburg’s actors and actresses. Miss Josephine Bailey as bride, Pete Chase as groom, Harvey Tyson as preacher, Miss Oma Powers and Martin Foley as parents, Miss Ruby Peak as bridesmaid, Claud Olney as best man, and Miss Viola Thomas as flower girl. The event, with a scaled back orchestra, aims to raise money for basketball sweaters.
At midnight two Los Angeles visitors stole a car from Scott Garage in Lordsburg after checking in at Hotel Hollow. They loaded cash from the office, abducted Dr Augustin del Campo from his Chandler, and attempted to flee toward Aden before their car was recovered near the smelter. Sheriff Oscar Allen, Eugene Montague, and Picking Anderson tracked them to Paso and Vaso, where both suspects faced $6000 bonds on two counts. del Campo’s car was returned undamaged.
The editor left yesterday at noon for a quick business trip to Los Angeles. He will handle assignments and return as scheduled, coordinating with the desk upon arrival.
Child star Wesley Barry stars in a dramatic screen vehicle titled Rags to Riches, presented at Star Theatre with emphasis on wealth, happiness, and a moral about true riches. The review highlights Barry as lovable and the production as entertaining and well acted.
Fred Lewis of the Scott garage force will drive a Studebaker in the big auto races at Juarez. The article notes he is certain to perform well and will not be trailing.
Constable Harry McKeel left Tuesday for San Bernardino California to bring back Mrs. E H Long who is charged with kidnapping her three year old grandson Lester Malcolm Jackson. Mr and Mrs B S Jackson were from El Paso in connection with the procedure. Jack Heather buys Studebaker Sedan through Wade B Smith.
A 1929 Plains dispatch notes Lordsburg New Mexico selected to deliver an address on Progressive Construction of the Bankhead Highway in New Mexico. W E Holt is asked to provide mileage and expenditure figures for inclusion in the convention proceedings and daily papers.
Taxpayers must file with the district collector by March 15, 1925 to avoid penalties. Extensions up to 30 days may be granted for illness or absence, with further requests to the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. Penalties include 1,000 dollars plus 2 percent of tax due for late returns, and harsher penalties for willful evasion or false filings.
Rush editor of the Duncan Valley News and other Gila Valley papers was the luncheon guest Tuesday. Miss Helen Martin, a well known local reporter in Duncan, assists as his reporter.

Mrs ER F Lyday entertained the N and T club Tuesday afternoon with special guests Mrs C Fuller and Mrs Griffith visiting during the gathering.
The 8 8 8 Club met Saturday evening at the club rooms. Nancy Chase serves as president with Helen Johnson as secretary and Zena Whistler as treasurer. Refreshments were served. Mrs. Sylvia Bush left Wednesday room for Long Beach.
Washington plans a June Shrine week event featuring a two mile dance on Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House. A 200 piece band will perform with amplifiers along the route allowing all visitors to dance in unison, illustrating unity of the states and DC.
The Ching Copper Company reports Gallup coal mines ensure fuel supply for a self-sustained China unit with ore reserves of 105 million 5,804 tons at 16.2 percent copper. Daily ore capacity has grown from 1,000 to 11,000 tons with about 1,950 workers. Last year output reached 28,066,414 pounds copper at 12.19 cents per pound. sales averaged 13.60 cents. Current assets total 84,900,027 and current liabilities 5,040,254 with a working capital of 2,459,772 as of December 31, 1922.
Army appropriation reductions shrink the Citizens Military Training Camps quota in the Eighth Corps Area from 3600 to 2480. Camp allocations shift to Sam Houston Texas 1100, Ft Bill Oklahoma 1000, Ft Logan Colorado 500, Vt Hauchucca Arizona 200. Among those attending the big cattlemen's convention at El Paso are Frank R. Coon and wife Edward Cureton and wife J W Cureton John T McCabe B R Dunagan and B M McWhorter Representative John T Muir went to the meeting at El Paso following adjournment of the legislature.
