Temporary Landfill Ban Proposed by CALL in Hidalgo County Meeting

In a Monday public session Citizens Against The Lordsburg Landfill urged Hidalgo County to adopt a temporary moratorium on new landfills. Paul Robinson of the Southwest Research and Information Center cited groundwater contamination at 43 of 50 studied sites as evidence of landfill dangers.

39 Champs To Receive Honors

The 1939 Lordsburg Maverick State Championship basketball team will be honored in a ceremony at halftime of the second game in the State Tournament on Thursday evening March 9 at U N M Arena in Albuquerque. After the game a hospitality suite will follow at the Ramada Classic Hotel funded by Coca Cola and hosted by N M A A. Team members include Alfredo Guzman Roy Jones James Cureton Santiago Gutierrez Isabel Sanchez Raymundo Saucedo Heisel Martin Margo Estrada Vernon Thompson and Allen Hill. Coaches are Robert Bob Pierce and Glen Moses. Two bills before the legislature seek to establish state guidelines for regulating landfills. Until action is taken at the state level local governments are the best option for dealing with landfill problems.

Senate Bill 2 Advances 36 to 2 in Senate Action

A version of Senate Bill 2 clears the chamber by a 36 to 2 vote Tuesday, detailing a transfer station at the Philadelphia dock to unload refuse from barges onto railcars. Drigg's Corp of Capitol Heights Maryland bought the site in Philadelphia for 1.5 million dollars and may spend up to 15 million to ready the facility. The firm plans to ship waste to landfills in West Virginia and, if feasible, New Mexico, with options to acquire 20,000 acres there for future landfill use.

Animas School Board To Meet

The Animas School Board will meet in regular session on Tuesday, March 15 at 7 30 p m in the Animas School Elementary Library. The upcoming agenda will be posted in all Post Offices. The public is encouraged to attend.

Drug Free Presentation Monday at Lordsburg High School Library

Mary Melton PhD will present a Drug Free Schools program at 6 30 p m in the Lordsburg High School Library Las Cruces inviting all interested parties. She will also train Lordsburg School faculty in identification and intervention techniques for at risk students in drug and alcohol abuse.

Lordsburg Seeks Zoning Ordinance and Civic Meetings

The city notes the need for a zoning ordinance to protect land use and property values and cites the Lordsburg ordinance text. It invites residents to March 14 at the Hidalgo County Courthouse for landfill information and a March 12 softball organizational meeting at the Civic Center. Lordsburg High Students Shine at Regional Science Fair

Four Lordsburg High School delegates competed in the Southwest New Mexico Regional Science Fair. James Overturf earned second in the Senior Division and received the New Mexico Geological Society Citation Award in Earth and Space Science. Monica Guardiola captured third in the Senior Division, Alanna Frazier and Kim Morris earned Honorable Mention in the Junior Division.

Lela Mae Walter, 84, of Lordsburg died Monday March 6 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home. Funeral services were Thursday at 11:00 at Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel with Rev. Floy Richie officiating. Interment at Mountain View Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, a daughter, two brothers, seven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.
