Signup Deadline For Cotton Growers Set

Farmers are reminded of the March 15 deadline to apply for the 1968 upland cotton program. Mavericks Fall to Cloudcroft in Regional Tourney

Lordsburg High School Mavericks were eliminated after a 71-58 loss to Cloudcroft in the regional tournament. Trailing 19-16 after one and 30-28 at halftime, Lordsburg fell behind 55-43 after a 27-point third period as the Bears surged ahead and clinched a spot in the state tourney.

Manslaughter Charge Against Billie Brooks Dismissed

Billie D. Brooks of Virden had a manslaughter charge linked to his wife Evelyn’s death dismissed by District Judge Norman Hodges on assistant district attorney William E. Martin’s motion. The case, tied to Evelyn Brooks found dead Oct 18, was not detailed why the motion succeeded, and a Feb 29 trial was cancelled with Brooks free on bond since the October preliminary hearing.

Ray Gabehart of Mountain States Telephone in Lordsburg says MST will contact local firms from March 14 to arrange directory listings for Lordsburg Deming Silver City Bayard Hurley Santa Rita Reserve Central Cliff Gila Glenwood and Columbus with an emergency numbers index. The canvass ends March 22 1968 and delivery begins May 22 1968. April 5 1968 is the white pages deadline and listings cannot change after April 23 1964.

Local man escapes serious injuries after rollover

M Reynolds, Jr. received only minor cuts and bruises when the auto he was driving left the road and overturned Saturday around 9 p.m. at the junction of US 70 and State Road 90. The automobile, owned by J. S. Culberson, was a total loss.

Progress Ticket and Judge Brown Triumph in City Election

Mayor Alan Koff and the Progress ticket won decisively in the municipal election held Tuesday. Municipal Judge C L Brown was reelected, defeating Albert M Martinez 576 to 2869, with 984 total votes cast across two divisions. Walter, Allen, Lazar, and Altuna won council seats. Ward races favored Walter, Allen, Lazar, and Altuna amid lighter turnout.

Parley P. Jones Elected Mayor of Virden

In Virden a March 5 municipal election produced tight results with write in ballots Parley P. Jones won the mayoralty. Four council members Stanley Thygerson Donald C Nelson H M Pace and Raymond Crum were elected and one new council member will be named city clerk.

PTA Film Molested to be Shown at Lordsburg Meeting

An outstanding film titled Molested will be shown at the Lordsburg PTA meeting on Monday March 11 at 7 30 p m in the school cafeteria. The film is being shown nationwide to church and city groups aiding youth and all interested persons are invited to attend.
