Lordsburg City Council Winners Announced in Off-Year Election

Pansy McDonald led with 448 votes to win District One on the Lordsburg City Council for four years, unopposed Chris Musquiz will represent District Three, Joey Mora edged George Craig in District Two, and Bobby Borrego won District Four. Total votes 587 at the Civic Center. Mayor Pro-Tem Danny Placencia and others join four new council members. Clark Smith to serve as mayor with two years left.

Sheriff Deputies Push Union Vote at Hidalgo Meeting

Deputy Lisa Diaz announced that about eighty percent of the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department favors unionizing as she requested a special meeting with the Hidalgo Commission. The commission agreed to a session but date was not set. The Monday meeting focused on personnel policy, slated for ordinance, with County Manager Tommy Anderson proposing changes since 1983. Further work sessions are expected before presenting the ordinance.

Businessman Seeks Virden School Land for Plant

San Diego businessman Bill Pease asked the Lordsburg School Board to sell or lease about 20 acres of Virden school property for a manufacturing plant using computerized sewing equipment. He expects 200 to 500 employees and needs land for parking next to the old school building. Board President Lance Williams warned that such a sale could force a new Virden school. The board advised contacting BLM for a possible land trade and requested a written proposal. Resident Nelson Lunt sought an easement to run a water line and place fire hydrants as Virden builds its own fire district.

Lions Pancake Supper Set For March 16

The Lordsburg Lions Club will host a Pancake Supper on Wednesday March 16 at the Lordsburg High School Cafetorium from 5 30 to 7 30 P M. Adults pay 3 00 and children 12 and under pay 2 00. Tickets are available from Lions Club members and door prizes will be drawn. Proceeds fund glasses for the visually needy.

Sharlees Family Restaurant Grand Opening in Lordsburg

Sharlees Family Restaurant opens for a three day grand opening Friday through Sunday behind Bill's I-10 Shell at 203 Maple. Owners Shirley Adams and Cheryl Chavez bring American and Mexican breakfast and lunch, with a 100 seat banquet hall. Chavez brings prior management experience at Denny's Sirloin Stockade and Border Cowboy. A Liberal ad on page 5 offers a ten percent grand opening discount.

Robbery at Saucedo's Market Near Western Bank

H A Saucedo of Saucedo's Super Market robbed Monday noon as he walked from his car toward Western Bank's drive Up Branch at 204 E 4th. A suspect in sweats grabbed two money bags containing about 10500 in cash and checks. The thief fled east between 4th and 5th Streets into a vacant church. Witnesses observed the theft and authorities seek leads. A $1000 reward is offered for arrest and conviction. tip line 542-8827.

Animas School Board Changes March Meeting Date

The Animas School Board has moved the March meeting from Tuesday March 8 to Tuesday March 15 at 7 30 PM in the Elementary Library. The agenda will be posted in area post offices and the public is encouraged to attend. This change applies only to March.

Saucedo's Super Market robbed near Western Bank

Herbert V Saucedo Jr reports a robbery outside Western Branch Bank at 12 15 pm on Monday February 29. Suspects took money bags with cash payroll checks food stamps WIC checks and personal checks from business on February 26 27. The note asks customers who cashed checks or bought items to stop payment and contact the store.

Lordsburg Special Events Center Construction Started

The Lordsburg Special Events Center project begins Monday per Mayor Clark Smith at the city council meeting on the 24th. The council debated rink flooring for skating and other activities, considering a low pile carpet at 16500 and a maple floor at 32000, weighing upkeep and shoe wear concerns before continuing discussion on page 2.

Cavaliere resigns as Hidalgo County Crimestoppers coordinator

Bill Cavaliere has announced his resignation after three and a half years as coordinator of Hidalgo County Crimestoppers citing an assignment transfer. He began law enforcement duties in the Playas area on March 1. The notice invites interested citizens to contact the sheriff’s office to form a new council and take over the program.

Hidalgo Smelter Shut Down For Three Week Maintenance

Phelps Dodge Corporation, the nation’s largest copper producer, announced Hidalgo smelter will shut for three weeks for repairs and maintenance. A two week March shutdown was extended to cover immediate repairs on the waste heat boiler while ensuring copper deliveries to customers remain unaffected. The company does not expect any significant impact on production or net income.

City crews schedule weekly street repairs and paving plan

City crews will repair pot holes and cracks on streets each Thursday weather permitting. Work will begin on the North side, moving southward, with North Street and Gold Street paving slated after a 10 inch water line is installed on North Street.
