Lordsburg Landfill Bill Faces Second Santa Fe Hearing

In Santa Fe on February 24, Citizens Against the Lordsburg Landfill CALL and local officials from Lordsburg and Hidalgo County attended the second Judicial Committee hearing on landfills. Senator Maes highlighted changes to Senate Bill 2 as discussions focused on fees, permitting timing, and funding for hydrology studies. Committee members debated a $75 per ton maximum fee to deter out of state waste while preserving safeguards, and a moratorium proposal was urged to wait for EID regulations.

Gallegos Receives USC Academic Scholarship Offer

Andy Gallegos, senior on the LHS Track Team, earned an academic scholarship offer from the University of Southern California to compete in the 800 meter and mile. He is active in football, basketball, and student leadership roles while maintaining a 4.04 GPA and ranking third in his class. Gallegos awaits official times in late April and early May and is the son of Ernest and LouAnn Gallegos with two brothers.

CALL Holds Brief Meeting Monday

CALL met briefly February 27, 1989, discussing fund-raising items. Bumper stickers priced at 3 dollars each available at Western Auto. call Toni Lowery at 542-9789 for info. A raffle for a painting titled The Last Supper will be held March 23 at Montez Home Center. raffle tickets cost 1 dollar. Also, CALL promotes recycling junk at a city dumpster to fund legal actions. The next CALL meeting is March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hidalgo County Courthouse courtroom.

Low Income Tax Help Arrives at Hidalgo County Courthouse

The Revenue Division will assist low income residents with tax returns March 13 and 14 from 9 30 a m to 5 p m in the Commissioners Chambers Hidalgo County Courthouse.

Landsail Race Near Lordsburg Sponsored by Optimist Club

For the seventh year Lordsburg Optimist Club will sponsor Landsail Race on March 18 and 19 on BLM land eight miles west of Lordsburg. Entry is 20 dollars with cash prizes and trophies for top finishers and best design. A Bicycle Freestyle Rodeo for ages 5 to 15 returns March 18 at 10 00 a.m. with three age groups, no entry fee, parental consent required, trophies for top three.

Lordsburg Mavericks Stage First McDonald’s Fifty Fundraiser

Saturday March 4 Lordsburg High School baseball team hosts the first annual McDonald’s Fifty a 50 inning fundraiser and practice session for the upcoming season. McDonald’s sponsors coupons for pledges to support the Mavericks with undershirts and supplies. Pledges seek a nickel per inning or 2.50 for the full game aiming for 500 dollars. donations are tax deductible.

Two Aliens Charged With Aggravated Burglary and Larceny

Two undocumented workers from Mexico were arrested last Friday and charged with aggravated burglary and larceny over 250 dollars after breaking into the Fitzpatrick home on Gray Ranch while residents were at work. They signed for a UPS package inside, were later found armed with rifles, and apprehended after being tracked south. Stolen property was found with them. arraigned in Magistrate Court, held under 17,500 dollar bond.

Road funding hear for I 10 to Ranchos de Hidalgo link

The House Taxation and Revenue Committee heard testimony on a 1.7 million request to build a road from the Muir Exit on Interstate 10 to Ranchos de Hidalgo. Sponsor Tom Foy and County Manager Tom Anderson answered questions as Hidalgo County officials voiced support alongside a State Highway Department representative. The panel will review the request and issue recommendations before appropropriation committee action.
